Only in Arkyland

Post by ponyte »

Quick recap, The Beloved Razorback’s Marquel Wade levels a huge cheap shot on Vandy's punt returner. Wade leads with his helmet, hits the guy before the ball gets there, then does the tradition tribal celebration dance that usual accompanies a cheap shot (what is it with cheap shot artist and their celebrations?).

Anyway, the kid gets kicked out for the game and the SEC puts a one game suspension on the kid.

In n true Beloved Razorback fashion, the local rag's chief apologists is claiming that the suspension was not only to much, but that the kids only issue was leading with his helmet. In fact, the officials got it wrong when Vandy advanced the ball after the cheap shot. As usual, even flagrant cheap shots are excused by the Beloved Razorbacks.

What is sad is the SEC officials got it right and we all know the CUSA officials would have screwed this up royally.

What's ridiculous to me is the fact that he was pissed off after he was ejected. It's like, dude, do you not realize you made a huge mistake? That you knocked a PR out before he even touched the ball? At college speed mistakes will be made but to go flaunting it clearly demonstrates some Ar[s]kyness.

Since he's from Arky, did he knock out his last remaining tooth on the play?

Even the announcers are quick to say that he should be ejected

One of the comments on youtube under the video. Stallion actually is correct when he says homers can sound incredibly stupid:

"HE DIDN'T WAVE!!! THe fair catch has to be above the head! He did below his waist which isn't a fair catch. Plus Vandy returned it which makes it a penalty on Vanderbilt. Even on a fair catch, if the ball hits the ground it can not be returned."

In 10 years the kid from Vandy will have graduated with a real degree from a great school and be gainfully employed with a good job. The Arkansas kid if he even graduates will do so with some football player friendly degree ("General Studies") and be making less than the Vandy kids unless he gets into the pros. The Arkansas kid can do his dance now, but in 10 years bet the Vandy kids can say "scoreboard."

There was no fair catch signal. Still, creaming the PR prior to the ball violates the right to catch the ball rule. Also, since there was no fair catch, Vandy can advance the ball. The ball wasn't touched by anyone prior to its advancement. Of course the PR held his hand up to shield the sun but made no attempt to wave his arm in an attempt to fair catch.

We have three possible fouls (though only one was called)

A) head to head contact and launching. Not called
B) Interfering with the right to catch the ball (doesn't require a fair catch). Called
C) Taunting after the hit. Not called

Though it may not be applicable to this situation, a player for Fresno State did the same thing (no taunting rule or head to head back then) and was ejected and suspended a game.

The Beloved Razorback coaching statements are that this issue has been addressed and the suspension will occur. Nothing about the bad officials or unfairness of the penalty.

It was helmet to helmet but I did not see any chest pumping celebration like the announcers were suggesting.

That occurred was when the "HALO" rule was in effect. Since abandoned.

Sure negatively affected his NFL payday!

BTW we lost!

If Arkies are looking to leave because the refs make it too hard to play Vandy, we would be happy to trade places

You have to understand their mentality- for many years the r-backs used to bring their own refs. :P They just aren't used to having only semi-biased officials.
