Coach Bronco Mendenhall 's acknowledgment and confirmation Monday that there have been conversations between BYU and the Big East has attracted plenty of attention around the country.
The Star-Ledger in New Jersey and the Orlando Sentinel are among the East Coast newspapers that are reporting that BYU is the Big East's next expansion target.
"BYU would help the Big East create a strong Western division, a requirement of potential new member Boise State, which was authorized last week to accept a Big East invitation by the Idaho state board of education. The Broncos are waiting to see if the league can form that Western football division before accepting an invitation as a football-only member," writes Tom Luicci of the Star-Ledger. "Air Force, SMU, Houston, Central Florida and Navy are also expected to be asked to join the Big East, with the academies being added for football only. The league's stated goal is to have two six-team divisions once Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia leave following the 2013 season, after all three sit out 27 months as part of the Big East's exit penalty."
Boise State coach Chris Petersen says BYU would be a good partner with the Broncos in the Big East, according to the Idaho Statesman.
Meanwhile, the Tulsa World is publishing numerous emails at the University of Oklahoma that deal with conference realignment. One email is from a BYU alum, and OU professor, telling school president David Boren that the Cougars should not be a member of the Big 12.
Another email is from a San Diego State official, who writes Boren to tell him that the Big 12 should consider SDSU rather than BYU as a potential member of that league.
"Is there anything that [SDSU A.D.] Jim [Sterk] or I can be doing to share the message about all San Diego State's advantages?" writes Jenny Bramer, SDSU Associate Athletic Director. "Or for that matter sharing all the disadvantages of being in the conference with BYU!"

Hi Joe,
I hope all is well as your student-athletes are returning to class! Are Joe Jr. and Jonathon in high
school now? Exciting times.
I just left a message with Jan but figured I could at least start our conversation via e-mail.
Our new Athletic Director, Jim Sterk, has been communicating with Dan at the Big 12 regarding San
Diego State’s entry into the Big 12 if realignment occurs again. I’m attaching some documents Jim
sent him. I thought you would find them of interest. As a major player in the conference I know
your opinion matters most in making this decision so I just want to make sure that you have heard
the advantages of San Diego State (in addition to working with me again!)
Beyond the obvious recruiting pool out here in Southern California, our tv market is untapped. Fox
is launching Fox SD for the Padres and that Fox relationship would be a nice complement to the Big
12’s current deal.
Of course I personally would enjoy being back with my roots but when you look at the similarities
to the schools the marriage actually makes sense -tv households, quality football and basketball,
excellent Olympic teams, competitive education (last year we had 60,000 applicants for 7000
admissions), facilities with the "wow" factor, etc.
Is there anything that Jim or I can be doing to share the message about all San Diego State’s
advantages? Or for that matter sharing all the disadvantages of being in the conference with BYU!
Thanks Joe. Talk to you soon.
Go Aztecs!

So I assume SDSU is no longer pushing to join the BE along with BYU as has been rumored?

Re: More BYU BE talk
The only good thing about SDSU is the location. Dare I say, I enjoyed my vacation in San Diego more than Big Island Hawaii (Maui cant be topped). Also we need a team to btho, I mean with our west division its going to be very competitive especially if BYU is in the mix. I mean try to imagine beating boise, houston, BYU, TCU, (typically Big 12 team). I mean thats 5 out of 12 games that will be extremely hard to beat. Adding SDSU in there is a nice trip to Cali, and a nice easy win to take a breath.

that would still be easier than playing OU, OSU, TCU, Tech, Texas if we were in Big 12. We are capable of accomplishing your scenario in a few years if we maintain our current commitment to Football and athletics in general.

Oh no doubt, I mean, I personally think we have the capability to beat tech, and kansas. Hopefully with the BE for x amount of years we could move over or just enjoy being in a stronger conference I dont know. There is no doubt with BE we should be able to surpass people in our conference with size of our budget and commitment from the admins.

Wasn't SDSU looking at dropping FB as short of a time ago as last year?

Re: More BYU BE talk
Something that has not been said (to my knowledge) that is a definite advantage for SMU joining the BE. If SMU continues to improve and becomes a powerhouse in the eyes of the Eastern USA, they could become a 'DARLING of the EAST' sports market. I suggest that a strong fb team year after year in the BE would get much more favorite press than a team out of (lets say) Big12! How's SMU -"America's (University)Team" sound? OK I have read that one before...Pony Up!
