Football Proceeds

Post by AusTxPony »

I've always been curious about how much a football team makes from a game. Say we play at TCU and they have 30,000 at $50/ ticket. How much do we get from that game? Then say we play TCU in Ford at $50/ticket and 30,000 attendance, what do they get? Does it vary with the opponent? Anyone explain?

So how much did we get to play the aggies...was it around a million or did we take less to play them? Or is it just home and home with a buyout?

I thought visiting teams get half of the revenue?

while I don't pretend to know our numbers, primary revenue comes from suites/clubseats/season tickets. Students don't generate anything (other than probably an allocation to athletics from student fees) but the bottom line is that the home team generally keeps the gate...then has contractual obligation to pay visitor whatever was negotiated.

Our lack of a large following is what hurts us. Same deal in hoops. Programs that draw 80k per game can afford to pay visitors $500k-$1,000,000 so big time programs get home/home deals with other bigs and can generally schedule more than half their games at home because there are always programs like ours that will take a money game and either never get a home game in return or will get some return deal that takes into consideration the differences in what gate receipts might be generated.

I doubt we have an "equal" deal with TCU. In other words, I expect it has been recognized they draw better than we do and would therefore want a larger visitor's payout from us than they would want to pay us (especially considering the disproportionate number of fans they travel vs what SMU does). Ford's advantage, if there has been one, is increased revenue from suites and club seats but TCU is moving quickly to fix that disparity.

Hoops scheduling is a real problem when we can't draw more than 1500. That's why you see the types of visitors you do at Moody. Once upon a time you could get visitors for $10k but I don't know what the "minimum" is these days ( I know from the AD at College of Charleston that more than 10 years ago they got $25k for a visit to KY...which could yield $75k or more today from what I hear)
