Jump Ball to Taylor Thompson in the 1st Half

More actual football observations from yesterday's game:

How did everyone react upon seeing McDermott attempt to throw a jump ball in the corner of the end zone to a DEFENSIVE END? WTF was that play call?

While Navy's DBs may not have had the speed of our WRs, they were able to drop into coverage effectively enough. All of our WRs are 5'10" and seemed to have a hard time getting open downfield against taller Navy DBs. Someone made the point in another thread that Navy was able to drop linebackers into coverage because McDermott is not a threat to run.

My point is that we need at least 1 WR who is 6'3" or 6'4" for those end zone situations and who can be a big, visible target downfield. Do we have any recruits coming who fit this profile?

that was a chicken Sh*t pee wee league play - the wildcat I have no problem with. Beasley made it easy to get in. Our red zone offense has been horrific. Give it to line 3 or 4 times, surely he can get in.

we have several wide outs taller then 6-2 height is not the issue.

totally agree on the DE play. June is our worst enemy sometimes.

Living in St. Louis, watching June and some of his play calling and time management remind me of Mad Mike Martz. Peter principal at its best. Where and who is our Brenda Warner?

I had no problem with the call and we had Taylor isolated one on one; remember he played TE in H.S. and presumably has decent hands. Just poor execution by JJMc

like we had a bunch chances to run efffectively inside the 5? third down, 4 yds, CUSA leading runner in backfield and an experienced O line - hell yes you run it twice over a throw to DE. you cannot defend this call - it was moronic.

I liked the call. Put a couple of 6' 6"+ very large, very athletic DEs in the wide out position and watch opposing CB and coaches soil their pants.

First, it wasn't Thompson's or Hunt's fault that JJ threw a 'jump ball' on a rope where any height advantage we had was negated.

Name one corner on the face of the earth that could stuff Thompson or Hunt on the line and knock them off their route? Name one corner that can manhandle Thompson or Hunt in a jump ball situation?

And the options available with those athletic advantages will cause other defenses problems. What if Thompson and Hunt instead of fade routes run post. Both corners and safeties have to cover because of the height advantage. Now the flat routes and the backs out of the back field (or TE) are wide open. ANd if we ran a run play to the corner, Thompson and Hunt could easily block the safety, obliterate pursuit with crack back blocks (legal) or if in man, block the safety and take the corners with them. Those huge advantages create all kinds of red zone headaches for Houston and Rice. Some of us remember OSU setting a record in the Red Zone for TD receptions when a tall athletic receiver just out jumped our short corner all night long for TDs.

And face it, had JJ toss the ball up for a jump ball and Thompson comes down with it, we would be beaching about why it took Jones so long to use these guys in this situation.

just about any corner can out jump a tall guy with no vertical. they are both great athletes but are not good recievers in that situation.

Needlessly high risk - just like the A&M on sides kick. June would rather look unpredictable then win the game.

I think you underestimate our DE's athleticism. Ponyte is right; we execute that play and Taylor goes up to make that catch and Jones is a great playcaller making the most of the athletes he has
