Hate to Say I told you so

Post by Pony in SA »

This game like many others was on the offense and they laid an egg big time. Pathetic. Played a below average Navy team missing 2 starters and 2 true freshman in the secondary. And this is nothing new, our offense really has not been good for awhile, at least not consistent. If you remember we got 7 points at TCU because of the kickoff fumble, not the offense.

I think it is legitimate to question the coaching on the offensive side of the ball, especially if this is supposed to be their area of expertise. Some of you need to be objective and realize it is just not this year but for awhile offense has not been a strength. To me this is reason you question if Jones is the guy some claim he is.

TCU's offense is ideal. SMU's offense is worthless.

Good points Pony in SA...and why was only ONE deep pass attempted all day (and was incomplete)? We all know that the way to open up the inside routes is to go over the top to keep the DB's in check. And yes we shouldn't have thrown deep when it was into the wind in the 1st and 3rd quarters, but when we had the few chances on offense WITH the wind, why in the world didn't we take advantage of it?

Well, I'm no expert, but I think this is the same offense that lit up Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl not long ago

If only we could have gotten Paul Johnson to come here...the wind would not have been a factor and we would have a QB who could run. Of course he wouldn't be able to throw, so we'd still be complaining about our inability to come from behind to win games...because that is what we do after a loss.

Hawaii was a long time ago. Why dont we revel in our 1983 cotton bowl win while we are at it?

You have to admit in the relevant history we look good only against horrible competition, only exception being TCU.

i would happily trade straight up for Johnson right now.

Well, I'm no expert but if Johnson were here, we probably would have figured out how to stop the option.

Georgia Tech vs Navy would be a good game...as long as you don't like seeing QBs throw the ball

It would be like watching football before the legalization of the forward pass.

Did you see the line up of the safeties for Navy all night? They were 15 yards deep before the snap of the ball and the first two steps were backwards every play. The corners took deep drops where it looked like they were playing 4 deep instead of 2 or 3 deep every play. The backers took incredible deep drops the entire game. Navy's game plan against our passing O was obvious, nothing deep. SHSU did the same thing several years back. And with far less athletic defensive secondary players, limited our passing attack.

Keep everything in front and don't allow anything deep and Navy executed that plan to perfection.

When folks drop so deep, the flat and underneath stuff is open and that is all we had the entire night. And it opened up the inside running game. We did execute these parts of our O fairly well.

Good points pontye and understand and saw the two deep safeties( they are also big kids) played deep, but you still have to test them, work them and keep them on their toes and IF one or two passes could be completed deep, then the complexion of the game changes.

And why not run at them with two WR's?....which gets them in some trouble against crossing routes. The crossing routes end up rubbing (or "picking") the defenders off, which leaves one of our wide receivers running free.
