SMU vs. Penn State in Hawaii Bowl???

Post by skyscraper »

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State is toxic.

Those aren't my words, but someone involved in the college bowl selection process. And that's how he described how attractive -- or, in this case, unattractive -- the Nittany Lions are as a bowl team.

The Big Ten has eight bowl bids and could end up with 10 bowl-eligible teams. If the Nittany Lions (8-2) don't reach the Big Ten title game, it's a very real possibility they could get bypassed by all of the Big Ten bowls and be shipped to a non-Big Ten bowl that doesn't have enough teams to fill its conference obligation.

...

One bowl official believes Penn State will get "shopped" to a non-Big Ten bowl, possibly a Conference USA bowl since C-USA is projected to not be able to fill all its bowl slots.

"Maybe they could end up in [Conference USA's] Hawaii Bowl?" a bowl official said. "That's about as far away as you can get."

what's more toxic to a Bowl team is how little fans Northwestern would bring to a Bowl. No way the last few Big 10 Bowls (Ticket City or Pizza Bowl in Detroit) chose Northwestern over Penn St. They have huge stadiums to fill. The Hawaii Bowl also may have better options in CUSA which has 3 teams flirting with Top 25. I think you would have a greater chance of seeing SMU v. Penn St in Ticket City Bowl than Hawaii. Ha! wouldn't Penn St love the references to SMU's DP. I think this report is a fixment of someone's imagination because they probably get better ratings because of publicity. Also, Penn St is still in running for Big 10 Championship

This would mean that SMU would not be at the Hawaii Bowl. Penn State vs. WAC

Exactly. Penn St. would be replacing a C-USA team because C-USA can't fulfill its obligations. Not playing against a C-USA team.

And Stallion, I agree with you on the ticket sales, but there is also the title sponsors and advertising dollars to deal with. Cars.com already pulled its sponsorship of last weeks game against NU and next weeks game against Ohio St. (Which was probably stupid. The NU game got one of the highest ratings for an 11am ESPN game ever.) Still, not sure how many sponsors want to associate themselves with PSU at the moment.

Two of the most scandalous programs in college football history. Should be a nice match-up.

Uh... Big difference we got screwed, because they decide to put that rule out when we were already in violations... also we were the only school to be screwed when countless schools at the time were doing it but they had more political power to protect themselves. Small schools always get screwed over versus big Bevo like schools. Penn State was a lack of oversight, terrible controls to protect innocents from monsters, an isolated program. They deserve the DP, we deserve the DP as long as its fair to give the DP to pretty much all SWC teams.

If SMU and Penn State meet, it will be in the Ticket City Bowl.

I would rather not play Penn St. Too much bad publicity with that school. In previous years, yes. Not this year or anytime soon for that matter. Their football program needs to clean house.

I think Ohio St is more likely to play in TicketCity Bowl than Penn St-they could possibly go 6-6

Northwestern has played in both of those games in the recent past so the bowl organizers know what they bring (or not) in terms of fans.
