KP as a fiery leader
I keep seeing this point made left and right on this board, usually as a defense against JJ McD starting. However, I have to question this. Where did this idea originate from? When KP was a starter, did the team not look incredibly flat against certain big-time opponents - UCF in the championship, and Army at a bowl game, and others? I'm not trying to bring down KP (I'm still a fan of his and would have loved to see him start after the A&M game), but I'm wondering if people here know something that I don't about KP's locker room leadership.

Re: KP as a fiery leader
For the UTEP game and against NW State specifically, he greeted both the defense and the offense every time they left the field: smiles, handshakes, high-fives, thereyougo butt pats. When he went in against UTEP to run in the touchdown, the team was visibly excited for him and players from the bench met him to tell him congratulations. Kyle also would walk around and encourage whatever team was sitting on the bench. I guess he did this too last year but I didn't really notice it because it seemed normal for the QB/2009 MVP to be the leader of the team. But with KP hurt and J.J. at the helm, that sideline enthusiasm is thoroughly gone.

Re: KP as a fiery leader
I don't remember, but when KP was misfiring last year, was everyone calling for his head and for JJ McDoody to see the field??? Maybe June is saying to the fanbase..."Okay, you asked for it...here's your steaming pile of McDoody on a silver platter."

Re: KP as a fiery leader
QB is not the problem with this team except for injuries to both of our guys who have played. If the head coach puts a guy in to play a position then it is the coaches fault if that kid is not ready to play. If he says that is the best he can do then the follow-up question is why didn't you do a better job recruiting and coaching guys to play the position? So simple. If Line can't go then why haven't you developed other rbs and given them playing time to develop....or is the coach more concerned with individual awards for players and that is why Line has been playing with multiple injuries and earlier on special teams as have other players like Beasley and Johnson. What other top rb in the country who is so important to his team also played on kickoff coverage units which is probably the most dangerous play as far as injuries. We have "idiot savants" as coaches. Brilliant in some areas and an embarassment in others. Maybe that is the way "football go."

I went to the SMU/UCF Championship last year-they didn't look flat or unmotivated-they looked overmatched-they were beat down physically by the much better team.

Stallion do you think the teams current rut is due to coaching, motivation, QB play or lack of talent?

Re: KP as a fiery leader
I predicted 7-5 so nothing has really surprised me that much this year except for beating TCU. I had a healthy respect for Southern Miss and Tulsa on the Road and a healthy respect for even NAVY at home. I marked them all down as probable losses BEFORE the season although I expected a close win by last week. I really don't think we are all that talented a team. Not many want to consider that so they start with the "coaching and motivation angle". I do think they have looked leaderless especially on offense for about a month though.

SMU Football must be so boring for you to watch because you are never really surprised by anything.

Spot on! I too predicted 7-5 at the start of the season thinking that we would win all the games we have won aside from TCU and lose to all but one of the teams we have lost to (thought we would win one of: TCU, USM, Tulsa, Navy, Houston). We just have to beat Rice to finish it off. As you have said numerous times start recruiting well and count to 5. The way I see it we have started recruiting well and this February we will be at 3 so I expect us to stay stagnant in the 6-8 win range the next couple of years and then finally break through.

Re: KP as a fiery leader
This just released.
As part of the school's continuing educational commitment, SMU is initiating an outreach class for senior citizens that will bridge growth in both their practical, as well as, interpersonal skills. To be known hereafter, as the Mustang Football Sideline Greeters Program. It is fashioned after the successful Wal-Mart Greeters' concept, in that MFSG's will be welcoming back to the sideline, Pony football players after a change of possession or a substitution of personnel on the field.
After a less than animated and loquacious bench display by the team for the USM, Tulsa, and Navy games; an ad hoc committee comprised of an alumni group, headed by Biff and Muffy Smith, and the football team's Mothers Club, approached the University with the idea.
President Turner when reached for comment said, "I don't give a Honey Badger's wit about this plan. But, if it increases donations and increases a higher achievement level of applicant to the school, and it gets us into an AQ conference faster, I say, go for it, and I felt we have needed this for some time." As he walked away he mumbled something about, " If it doesn't work, then it was an idea agreed to by those nuts, Orsini and Jones."
Male greeters will be required to wear a Navy Blue blazer, White Oxford cloth shirt, Breton Red Sail- cloth slacks, and loafers with no socks. The women have yet to decide on an outfit at this time, as many local fashionistas are presently in Paris, and can't be reached for consults.
Asked if this will cure the teams resent malaise attitude, Muffy Smith enthusiastically replied, "Oh gosh yes. We're gonna turn those frowns upside down, so the team will want to go out on the field and score many home runs."

I think most people thought 7-5 was reasonable, we just got tricked by the 5-1 record.

Re: KP as a fiery leader
I don't think the record surprises anyone. It's what the team looked like in the last few losses. We didn't look like a team that just got beat. We looked horrible and disfunctional on offense.
I'm beginning to think that's just a result of the offense we are trying to run. You are the better team, you look unstoppable. When you are not the better team, you look like garbage. Nothing in between.
