Looking for Leadership

Post by SMUGrad_1997 »

When Traci Wolfson interviewed Bobby Patrino at the half during the Arkansas/LSU game this week, his response reminded me of what I’d like to see in our SMU football coaching staff and leadership. She tried to create an emotional interview by calling the group "emotional and fragile" and Patrino shut her down quickly by saying "we’re not emotional or fragile…our guys are doing a great job, we’ve stuck together many times this year… I love this football team."

June Jones had a similar opportunity to respond to an inquiry earlier this month about the state of his team after both the Southern Miss and Tulsa losses and instead of a "Patrino-like" response, he instead said "when we get in these situations, teams are fragile…that’s not how a team needs to be…we just seem to be a real fragile team right now."

I have no idea if June Jones or if anyone in the Mustang football organization reads these posts but if he does I would like to share a quote I’ve heard many times within my own business circles "…as the leader goes, so goes the team." This means that the team looks to their leadership to set those critical standards and expectations. Whatever happens with the next seasons of SMU football, I hope that June and his leadership team understands their profound impact on the players. Those players will either rise or lower their standards based on the expectations set by their leadership. We all agree that SMU football is better than they were 5 years ago but "when great is possible, good just isn’t good enough" and we’ve all seen greatness with this team. As much as we all criticize the players, I would encourage all of us to expect greatness and stronger leadership from the coaching organization who truly set the tone for the overall organization.

Agree...not wishing to be political but it's like what our president has been saying about America during the last year. Don't apologize for those you are supposed to lead, expect greatness from them with stronger leadership.

Leadership has been lacking for some time. Commentators religiously point out how un-involved our coaches are on the sidelines with our players. I believe that Jones and crew have been in negotiations to go elsewhere. Recall Maryland last year?

If that is the case, hope the contract has been executed or there will be buyers remorse

You have to actually get another job offer first. There was no offer last year. That's what made the intentional leak 48 hours before the bowl game so infuriating...just venting.
