This is kinda what I mean
When Gerrick Mcgee made his initial appearance at UAB he said he wanted to start something at UAB to bring the fans together at the games. He talked about the hog call at Arkansas as an example. He wants something to get the fans together as a unit to be loud and proud of their school. He did not say he wanted to change the colors to red and white or change the dragon to a pig but rather he reached out to the community immediately to connect and tell them he wanted and needed their support.
That is what I want from Jones. He tries to change things, and granted he did so in order to try and instill a fresh start attitude of winning so I can understand some of that, but he has not done anything to embrace the Dallas community. If he wants the community support, they need to want to do so, not do so just because he wants them to.

This is exactly what has made me the most frustrated with JJ. If he had come to the Hilltop and embraced our traditions and reached out to the community for support rather than coming to the Hilltop, not doing anything to engage the community, and trying to change our traditions, things would be quite different. Unfortunately, this didn't happen.

I hope it works out for him...but
Attendance is abominable at UAB and probably isnt going to change.

what exactly does that mean?
i hear it a lot....
but exactly what would you do to "embrace the Dallas community"?

He could start by being friendly to the media. In some of his rivals interviews this season, he was giving one word answers, and downright rude. Hey June, these people are ready and willing to help spread the word. Get it?
To " embrace the Dallas community" he could show a little passion and energy for what he is doing here, and try to motivate people to jump onboard. If he can't do that, find someone who can. He has got to realize that this is not Hawaii. There are sports entertainment options here led by guys with big personalities like Cuban, and Jerry Jones.
When June got here, I was hearing people like Troy Aikman offering to become involved, and talking about wanting a college team to root for in Dallas. What happened!

JJ is just not a PR guy; can't really expect a guy to become something he's not
Assuming he is a short timer here, I agree it would be nice to have a "Ron Meyer" type of guy come in here behind him

Mrydel- exactly- you hit the nail on the head. If JJ has no interest in reaching out to the Dallas community then he should have somebody on his staff be the point person. Reinebold would be excellent for that as he is enthusiastic and engaging.

Reinebold would be perfect. Hugs would be nice too though as suggested by 00.

What traditions? the ones where no one shows up to support the team?
When jones arrived at UH he changed a lot of things for the better - new unis, new "name" (rainbow warriors --> warriors), new attitude. They hated it at first, then the fans flocked to support UH.
he didn't "change" anything at Smu but "add" to smu in order to try to generate some fan support.
There's nothing he's done to squelch any of smu's "traditions" that no one even knows about. I love peruna, who cares if there are 2 Mustangs (which is really our mascot) on the sideline? He weirs a lei - that's like telling tom laundry he shouldn't wear a fedora, or tressel not to wear a sweater vest. black uni's? so what, I think they look great.
Or, let's just keep doing the same ol' same ol' and see if all of a sudden attendance kicks it up a notch. yeah, that usually works.

Tom Laundry? Didn't know the Cowboys' most winningest coach ran a clothes cleaning operation. How about Landry? Yeah, the fedora is representative of the last coaching position he had. NY Giants and the fedora go hand in hand. Uh, let's go to the Hawaii Bowl so we can help the state of Hawaii. Wouldn't doubt for 1 minute that Sheldon gets a financial kickback if his teams play in the Hawaii Bowl. Dude is crooked. Go back Danno.

Re: This is kinda what I mean
Kind of... Good post but I would like to share a little more information.
I have seen June speak at the Richardson Chamber lunch, BOMA/IREM lunch and seen him play in a couple golf tournaments that are put on around Dallas. I have heard of him speaking to more than a dozen churches and church choirs too.
I really do not have a number on all that he has done and what I heard and saw was... granted two years ago... ( I have been super busy and have not attended many events in a while.)
What SMU needs is a bigger and more active athletic representation in the DFW metroplex. A Community Organizer you might call it.

Athletic Outreach,
Bottom Line it's Marketing.
My definition of a "Sale"
