I wanted to go to Cal
No joke. I don't know why I am bringing it up now other than someone made a joke about my SMU loyalty earlier tonight (I'm doing an '80s football doc on another school, but I can't yet talk about it). Anyway, we were talking about coaches/loyalty to a school, etc.
My dad went to grad school at Berkley. When he took me on a tour I said at the end, "Dad, I love SMU, but this is where I want to go to school."
He told me, "you'd get eaten alive here. This is not the place for you." He urged me, no joke, to go to Texas, where he had taught before coming to SMU. He said, "you'll love Austin."
He was right, I do love Austin. But as I told him, "I don't know that I could ever love burnt orange."
...
Anyway, my point is that WE ARE SMU fans. Bickering about June going/staying/being let go is pointless.
Been talking to June and Dickerson tonight - June is happy to be here, and Eric is happier still. We will win at SMU. We will win BIG!!! (Dare I say it? We will win BIG EAST kind of BIG!!!!)

Re: I wanted to go to Cal
I did a summer school thing at USC. One of the most fun times I ever had! Tuition was $18 an hour!!! Class in the morning, the beach all afternoon, and Hollywood all night!
Long live Inez Perez!

I wanted to go to Northwestern, but they didn't give me any money.

Northwestern is a sister school, so is USC.
I think it works against us that we have a religiously affiliated name (don't get me wrong, I love what the Methodist church has done for education in America), but no one seems to no that SMU, Northwestern, Duke, USC, etc. were all started by the Methodist church at about the same time.

Re: I wanted to go to Cal
For me it was probably more that SMU football was 1-10 my senior year and Northwestern went to the Rose Bowl.
Although in the end, it was scholarship money to SMU and the fact that I could walk-on to the football team (even though I decided not to at the last minute) that got me down to Dallas. I honestly hadn't ever heard of SMU until I was at a college fair. My mom asked if I wanted to go to the SMU table, and I said "what is SMU?" and she said, "well, it sounds like you should probably go check out their table then."
....Goes to show you how important it is to have a good football team.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times... this site needs a "like" function!!!

I'm applying to doctoral programs at the moment, sent an app to Berkeley, Stanford, and a few others (alongside SMU). I wouldn't mind being a Bear/Mustang or a Cardinal/Mustang fan :p
Re: I wanted to go to Cal
Thad, do you believe June is here for the long haul (at least 4 more seasons)?

Ha. On top of that, my dad got one of the first interviews with that guy in your sig picture after the DP was announced. He was in Omaha speaking at a charity event. So that is how far SMU fell out of the public consciousness in about 8 years. My own dad had an interview with ED that made national headlines and by the time his kid was looking at colleges, I had never heard of SMU.
....I've always been very glad my mom made me go up to that table at the college fair.

The name probably works against us in some way for people that don't looker deeper than a quick glance, but if you look at the diversity of the school when it comes to religion (atheist included), no one seems to be dissuaded by it. Methodist Church really is an unsung hero win it comes to establishing great American Universities with a hands off approach to allow the quest of knowledge and not church politics to thrive. Not a Methodist myself, but the name to me stands for a beacon for enlightenment and openness. If those other schools all had Methodist in the name, no one would think twice about SMU's affiliation. Told plenty of people from a wide range of religions to look at SMU and have never heard anyone feel like they were marginalized or out of place for their beliefs/or lack of while here. More and more people already know about SMU, and go "oh yeah, that's a good school."
Side history: Originally, the Methodist church wanted to move Southwestern to Dallas or Fort Worth (merging with Polytechnic (Texas Wesleyan) and keeping the SW name). SW refused, so SMU was born in Dallas. So we could have been Southwestern University.

He's always been open and honest with me, even after I told him I wasn't going to change my (our) commercial to include the geldings over my use of Peruna. To be frank, I thought that might be the end of my friendship with June.
Not that I though him petty, by any means, but if you read this board too much... you get a little, uh, mistrusting. Anyway, I was harsh with my comments about the fact that I was sticking to principals and not using Liberty and Justice, but he understood. I'm a man of Perunacipals.
I doubt he is here for the long haul, to be frank. Why? Not from his mouth, to be sure... but he's too valuable. We cry over the fact that Klemm might be gone. So be it. Let's not forget that we already have the "Sun God" here, Reinebold. Am I wrong, or wasn't he once national recruiter of the year???
Yes, June is committed to SMU... but I ask you all, in all honesty... how committed are you to your own current job? I don't care how much you love it, but if you are offered a 50% raise aren't you going to take it?
Yeah, let's be mad at June, sure... the timing of both his meeting and what would have been the official announcement sucked, but seriously???
I love me some SMU, and if I somehow were the coach, I would never leave unless I had to... unless it was for the betterment of SMU. June has no such ties. I guarantee you all you folks out there, you might have the best job in the world, but if someone comes calling offering a 50% raise??!? You would answer.

I never went to college. Joined the military instead. Became a fan of SMU because I am Methodist. I worked at UTA but they didnt have a football team and I wanted a team to follow so I picked SMU.

Thanks. My dad has taken me on tours of University's all over this planet. Stanford is awesome, I must say, and my Dad would agree... but if you can, go to Cal. Stanford amazed me in that it was sooo like SMU, but in a very different way. What I mean is, that Stanford had a unique look to it, and it all looked like "one university". But unlike SMU, it was soooo spread out (and of course, yeah, the look is very different.)
But Stanford never had this guy:

GO TO CAL!!!!
(My dad has so much cool stuff from the time that this happened. Too bad that link doesn't play all the way through.)
EDIT: BTW - My dad has taught at Stanford, too.
