last night's meeting
Understand that there were some really good vibes from last night's meeting on campus of SMU supporters. Around 6000 Mustang fans attended the bowl game. The coaching staff and players prepared very hard for the game and were ready. Probably the entrance into the Big East is going to solve a lot of money problems at SMU. The completion of the renovation of Moody is going to coincide with the first BB home game against a BE opponent.

Why do we have "money problems"?
the Mustang Club raises 2-3 million a year and athletics has to cost 5 times that

I think this is in reference to the overall profitability of our athletics program. I don't know the numbers but I would suspect we're not exactly making a lot of money. Going to the BE will help though.
And in terms of overall money at the university, I think we get carried away with what our endowment is. It's good but it can be a lot better. I believe that tcu has almost if not already caught up to us, which is unacceptable. Rice, on the other hand, has a much bigger endowment than we do. We need to increase this for our overall university to grow. It will help with university faculty, research, scholarships, etc. Anyways, that's a different topic but just wanted to throw it out there that we're not as rich of a university as we can be, and there's no point being complacent.

our AD operates in the RED. there is no "making money" it's subsidized by the university general fund.

I'm pretty sure the defecit is close to 15-20 million annually ... Found an old dailycampus article to back this up:

That said, SMU's annual budget is close to $330 million I beleive. Either way the Big East TV money is HUGE!!!

Exactly. This has decreased for us and it has increased for them from a few years ago. I believe we reached our peak at $1.4bn.

$5M is about right from a cash basis. The DC number takes into account the price of the scholarships that the athletic department is charged for each enrolled athlete.

Re: last night's meeting
I believe the university has to spend about $5M per year to keep the athletic programs afloat. The BE could solve that if the BCS does not throw a monkey wrench into the gears.

Re: last night's meeting
A loss of $5M is probably a really good year for SMU. In years past, I believe it was closer to -$10M
