Waaaaa! They didn't pick my college. It's so much fun to live in a town with one grocery store, one bar, one restaurant, one movie theater, one gas station and the only thing to do a Friday night is on Campus.

That's what I read.

Fun city to go to college in? Yes.
College town? Absolutely not.

Dallas is not the typical "college town" but I'd definitely choose it over Lubbock, College Station or Waco.

I attended school in Dallas, Austin, and New Haven. Austin and New Haven were great college towns. Dallas is a great city, but not really a "college" anything. In contrast, just about everything in Austin and New Haven revolved around the universities.

BTW - I noticed they included NYC in their list. Again, not a great "college" town for the same reasons.

Lets try to read a litle more into what is a great college town. I think most people think of a city that is not too large and centers around the university and has your old-school feel like college station, austin, lincoln, madison, iowa city, etc. then the other way is a town that is dynamic with a lot going on and things to do that the university is located. In other words, a world renowned city with a university. Hence, SMU is located in or close to a great worldwide city where there are so many cultures and activiities for everyone...not just football-only towns like college station and lincoln. Pro sports, clubs, restaurants, job opportunities and so on. And not just Dallas but the entire North Texas area. Why is it booming and companies relocating here for years....because it is a great place to raise a family and the quality of life and affordability and weather for a good part of the year is second to none.

I agree that Dallas is a great place to live. I loved my time at SMU and don't feel I missed out on anything. Nevertheless, Dallas really isn't a college town.

Generally, most people (but not the authors) understand that a college town is normally a mid-sized town where the University dominates life.

Of the big cities in the US, I would probably only count Boston as a college town. The sheer number of universities (some of them great - some of them mediocre - some of the trade schools) makes the university students very important in a pretty big city.

In all the other big cities including Dallas, the great universities are important, but not "that" important.

My favorite college town is Athens, Ga (UGA). No doubt.

Followed by Tuscaloosa, AL and Oxford, MS
