Run 'n Shoot in the NFL - NYG and Cruz

Post by Cash McMogulson »

This article discusses the history of the Run 'n Shoot and how the concepts are still used throughout all levels of football, including by the Giants. It also explains (and links to another post about JJ's RnS) briefly why we're basically the only team left that runs the pure RnS, and some of the limitations of running the pure RnS.

JJ's offense gets a lot of talk on here, and this gives a little window into our ambivalence towards the offense. The receiver read-routes concepts is effective, but the growth of more complex defenses and blitz packages also creates a need for more variability in personnel and formations even if you're essentially running the same concepts.

The comment on blitz packages also brings to mind that our QB's are constantly getting lit up and playing injured -- this has really hurt us in the second half of the last two seasons.

Hoping the Jason Phillips hire helps with this.

Responding to my own post is lame, but here's another article from the same guy that talks about the growth of the spread offense since 2000. JJ clearly understands the game, but have to wonder if he grasps how quickly football schemes shift now with the availability of film and other info online. Even the spread offense is constantly changing. The younger spread coaches like Holgorson and Sumlin, for example, have adapted and run variations of what they ran under Leach, who himself adapted from what he ran under Mumme.

For a coach still using the projector and transparency who has a very old staff, this has to be a concern and I think at least one reason why our offense looks so stagnant at times. I don't think JJ appreciates that you have to keep tinkering and adapting over time. Just as defenses learned to attach the true R'nS, other coaches and teams have learned to use the great concepts of the R'nS in ways that take these defensive adjustments into account. JJ is so adamant about not ever changing what we do. I think good defenses have an easier time game planning and adjusting to our offense because of that.

I think this is a very good post with concerns mentioned. We heard from the first hiring date about how complex the run and shoot is but it has proved ineffective due to the complexity of defenses and the great coaching on that side of the ball. If our qb's and wr's are reacting at the snap andor on pre snap to defenses moves then what do you do to defenses who know the reads and disguise them? Other passing offenses seem to fit qbs and wr's in without very much problems and many freshman are now starring without much of a learning curve. I still laugh to myself regarding the one-game experiment this year where JJ gave up on the qb coming over to the sidelines for the play because the receiver coach was trying to coach a fr wide receiver from the sideline on each play and he couldn't do it so JJ came over to help coach him each play. Therefore you had the head coach and wr coach coaching one fr receiver and you had to have the fr on the side of the formation to our sideline so he could hear both coaches. Result..... 1 catch for 9 yards!
