Ha! Even Poor Ole Karl Benson Jumps WAC Ship
he watched about 20 schools leave the WAC during his tenure and now he decides to leave too. Probably saw what happened to the Costa Concordia.

Now I bet he will kill the conference he so tirelessly worked to save.

Shouldn't the SBC and the MAC be talking alliance?
Re: Ha! Even Poor Ole Karl Benson Jumps WAC Ship
they could call it the titanic.

I actually felt sorry for Benson. He was in a no win situation with the WAC. As soon as there was any progress by any school they jumped ship on him and the other schools. Benson did about as much as anyone could in those situations, and he was always going to be a scapegoat for schools who either couldn't compete or chose not to. Everybody [deleted] about the BCS and the guy who had to take them on directly was always going to get thrown under a bus. Now it looks like the conference is going to stay alive. Good for them.
As far as his leaving is concerned, how long has he been there? What, 20 years? Something like that? He did his job and now he should be allowed to move on.
Best of luck dude. You at least tried.

He almost pulled it together 4/5 years ago with Utah, Boise State and TCU anchoring the conference and all in the Top 10. They thought and they were close to making a case for BCS. Problems were still distances and quality of the rest of the league.

Utah has never been in the same conference as Boise State. You are thinking of the Mountain West Conference. The WAC 4-5 years ago featured Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Utah State.

after SMU, Tulsa and Rice left, La Tech was a misfit in the WAC. They belong in either the CUSA/MWC eastern group or back in their original SunBelt home
Could get interesting to see whether the new CUSA/MWC destroys the SunBelt as a football conference

Rumor is that Benson plans to merge Sun Belt and WAC

Yep, you are right. Getting too old to remember without looking things up.
