Palcic Named Offensive Line Coach
March 12, 2012
DALLAS (SMU) - Bob Palcic has been named SMU's new offensive line coach, Head Coach June Jones announced today. Palcic, who has coached three Outland Trophy winners, comes to SMU after four seasons at UCLA, where he was Associate Head Coach - Offense and offensive line coach.
Prior to his time is Westwood, Palcic spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons coaching the offensive line at Wisconsin after 12 years in the National Football League. In all, Palcic possesses 40-plus years of coaching experience. Among the players Palcic has coached are Outland Trophy winners Gabe Carimi, Jonathan Ogden and Joe Thomas and All-Americans and NFL veterans Tony Boselli, Mike Flanagan, Craig Novitsky, Vaughn Parker and Ray Snell.
"Having worked with Bob in the NFL, I know the high level of expertise he brings to our staff," said Jones. "He has coached numerous college and pro standouts and I know he'll make an impact at SMU. I'm excited to have him join us."
In 2007, led by the offensive line, Wisconsin finished 9-4 overall and played in the Outback Bowl. There, Palcic tutored Carimi, who went on to win the 2010 Outland Trophy and was a first-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. In 2006, he coached Thomas on a Badger team which won 12 of 13 games. Thomas went on to become the No. 3 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.
Palcic went to Wisconsin from the NFL's New Orleans Saints, where he coached tight ends from 2000-05. His previous professional stops included coaching offensive line for the Cleveland Browns (1999), tutoring the tight ends for the Detroit Lions (1997-98) and leading the offensive line for the June Jones-coached Atlanta Falcons (1994-96).
Palcic also coached at UCLA during the 1993 season, working with Ogden as the Bruins won the Pac-10 championship and played in the 1994 Rose Bowl. Palcic tutored the USC offensive line in 1992 and helped the Trojans to a Freedom Bowl appearance. He was offensive line coach at Ohio State from 1986-91, a period during which the Buckeyes played in two Hall of Fame Bowls, a Cotton Bowl and a Liberty Bowl.
Arizona's offensive line was under Palcic's direction from 1984-85 as he helped the Wildcats to a Sun Bowl appearance. A two-year stint (1982-83) with the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts, which included a Grey Cup title in 1983, was preceded by a four-year (1978-81) stop as Wisconsin's offensive line coach. Palcic was Ball State's offensive line coach in 1976-77 and Dayton's linebackers/offensive line coach in 1974-75. He got his college coaching start guiding Ball State's linebackers as a graduate assistant in 1973.
A graduate of Dayton, Palcic and his wife Theresa have three grown children - Joe, Amy and Monica.

Wow. Another coach who can't recruit. All this wait for a coach I think we were all expecting to be unfortunately hired. I think JJ missed out here to bring in someone that can positively impact recruiting.

Mitch, please shorten that post. It is stretching my screen from here to China and it's annoying to have to scroll across

Another crap hire that just shows JJ doesn't plan on being here. Do we have any coaches who are going to actively recruit? JP sure hasn't shown us much.

Re: Palcic Named Offensive Line Coach
The speculation comes true. While I have heard much positive about Palcic, given the state of SMU football, I hoped JJ would hire a replacement that could step up recruiting. (I know all of us agree here.)
Why is it so hard to figure this out. When Mora took over ucla, if Palcic was worth it, he would have stayed. What happened was we lost our most active recruiter instead. It is tough being a Pony Fan.
Go Ponies!

Actually we lost our top two recruiters. Don't forget that JR left as well. So now JJ has decided to replace those two with a coach who has divided loyalties (JP) and a eunich who can't recruit..
WOW - things are really headed up.

I am in full blown panic about June not consulting with PF posters before making his hires. The guy that hired Reinebold, Klemm, Derrick Odum, Jason Phillips, and Tom Mason obviously does not know what he is doing. June please log-in to PF before any future hires and consult with the real pros.
I am worried about everything SMU

Too old. Too bad. Wasted opportunity. The sad thing is that June thinks an 18 yr old will care that this 60 yr old did whatever. that is the disconnect that we all are worried about. It will reveal itself in about a year

I think all JJ cares about with this hire is finding someone he knows can coach the OL the way he wants them coached for the R and S. Probably found his man.
