Questions about SMU from a BU fan

Post by WordUpBU »

Looking forward to our game this fall. Like your school and like your recent turnaround. It was fun to watch you upset TCU. Just a few questions for you guys.

1- What are your expectations for Garrett Gilbert and Preston?

2- Who figures to start other than DJ at WR?

3- Who figures to be your DE opposite Hunt? Is Grenier going to be ready at DE?

4- What about OL?

I'm glad to see you guys have stopped being the pushover of recent years too. My question to you is: what expectations do you have that you will continue to stay out of the cellar? I would love to see you and TCU knock off TT and OSU on a regular basis and kick 'em into the basement.

Was gonna keep it focused on smu but since you ask...
We have recruited well enough that I expect to be like Leach's tech teams. 7+ wins almost every year with a special season every few years.

Briles has always developed QBs so I am not worried there. Both Florence and Petty can perform well for us but it's Flo's job this year.

He has stockpiled OLine guys and after this April will be able to recruit them with the added stat of sending 4 or 5 into pro ball with 2+ first rounders and 3 who started as rookies.

D is a work in progress but has a lot of young talent coming up through the ranks.

WR and RB is an area where CAB always has guys.

We need a better st coach.

I don't live in Dallas therefore I get my news from this and Rivals websites, so no inside poop. What I think is that we have a great opportunity to improve on Offense with Preston, Gilbert or Kaiser, whoever wins that competition. WRs are fine and Darius is spectacular. I'd love to see Austin's Lagasse step into Beasley's shoes. Still could use a breakaway threat at RB, but not sure how we would use him unless he blocks well. Line is just so consistent and his back-ups, competent. It's the OLine that is questionable. Kicking game is suspect, but new rules will help. Defense seems to improve each year, so I would mark it solid. All that being said, our season depends on QB play and OLine maturity/depth. The schedule is tough, but most of the harder games are in Dallas. We could be 5-7 to 9-3. The first game at Baylor should tell us a lot. June indicates we will hit our stride around the 5th game, if so we should see an 8-4 season and maybe a CUSA Championship.

Some folks on here are always butt kissing TCU as the model to follow but how about Baylor?? Baylor might rival Stanford as overall athletic program.

I love Baylor, but it's their fifteen minutes right now.

I would agree with this. We really lucked into our current coaches in the Big 3 sports and I think as long as we can keep them then we be at least decent. We haven't lost a coach in the big 3 sports in modern history, so there is hope that we can keep all three (though only Grant Teaff was wanted by other schools so that's misleading). Really happy to see TCU,SMU, and Baylor playing each other in football every year, now let's get the basketball coaches to do it too.

You're legit and deep in men's basketball and that may last. Football we'll just have to see now that your greatest player since Singletary has left.

I am also happy we're playing Baylor. Natural rivalry with a long history.

Yep we are all very optimistic, but RGIII was once in a generation for us. The offense will have to score 35 at least to win most games.

Add a new QB and an untested O line to an offense that sputtered quite a bit last year ...well when we play Baylor it will not be pretty for us. I expect the line to be double digits for the Baptists.

What do you mean it will not be pretty... Where do you get that from.. Baylor does not have any tape on us... Baylor is going to have their hands full.. SMU is going to score this year and next year we have QB's wearing Red Shirts..

I have no idea how we will be next year.

OL- We have Collins and McJunkin who have both played a lot back. We have a lot of OL guys on the roster, and many of them were more highly recruited than the Bennet recruits we have had starting the last few years. Plus several have had a few years in the weight room and got to redshirt.

LB-Best in C-USA. Am excited about Sanders

RB- Still have Line. I dont know about Williams though? K.C. Nlemchi will probably be pretty good

QB- I think Preston will end up ok if Gilbert doesn't grasp the Offense. Biggest question mark IMO

WR- Will be a stacked position. We have recruited a lot of fast guys at WR and there are several that could possibly start. I think our WR group will be the best we have had in a long time next year

DL- Good at NT, but a little thin at DE. Then again I don't know anything about who our 2nd string DE's will be, and for all I know they may be pretty good

DB- I have heard Jones say we will have good depth at DB, so I am going to believe him

Kicking game- Going to be a little suspect
