NFL Rookie Takes Timeout to Give Commencement Address

Kelvin Beachum, Jr. is much more than a football player in the NFL. Drafted in the seventh round by Pittsburgh in April, Beachum is an important part of the Steelers’ future along the offensive line, but he’s quite the high academic achiever as well.

Following the NFL Draft, Beachum returned to Southern Methodist University in Dallas to receive his Master of Liberal Arts degree (with a concentration in organizational behavior). Beachum was the student keynote speaker, presenting the Commencement address to 150 of his fellow 2012 graduates of SMU’s Simmons School of Education & Human Development. The following day, he returned to Pittsburgh for rookie minicamp.

"It’s an honor, a privilege and something you could never plan for," Beachum said. "It was a tremendous honor."
