Optional seven-on-seven observations (7/26/12)
The Mustangs got together with some players from Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday for an optional seven-on-seven session. Some notes:
• QB Garrett Gilbert took the first snaps with the offense. With the TAMC defense playing back, Gilbert threw a lot of short passes over the middle and in the flats, leading three touchdown drives, connection on short scoring passes to RB Zach Line, WR Kyle Guinyard and WR Darius Johnson.
• QB Garrett Gilbert's accuracy on deep balls is becoming almost commonplace. On one play, he fired a high pass of about 50 yards toward WR Keenan Holman, who was streaking down the right sideline. The ball landed perfectly in Holman's right hand, but he was unable to hold on ... because a TAMC defender was dragging Holman down by his left arm (he still almost made the catch with one hand). The players from each team debated whether a flag would have been thrown. What was beyond debate was the perfect pass from Gilbert. A couple of drives earlier, he connected with WR Jeremy Johnson on a deep pass (of about 40 yards) along the sideline when Gilbert dropped the ball over two defenders who had Johnson pressed in to the side boundary. Johnson leaped high to make an acrobatic catch, and while players agreed that his foot came down just out of bounds, it was, again, the pass and the reception that were significant.
• S Hayden Greenbauer stopped a TAMC drive with an interception on the goal line that he returned to almost the 20-yard line.
• Unquestioned catch of the day: WR Austin Fuller ran in to the back left corner of the end zone, where he waited for a pass with a cornerback on his left shoulder. Fuller out-leaped the defender (by a lot), but because his left arm was pinned against his side, he reached across his body and over the cornerback with his right arm, tipping the ball and falling to the ground ... where he was able to reach out with his left hand and make the grab while lying flat on his back.

The more I read about Gilbert at these 7 on 7 workouts, the more I want to go buy one of those #11 jerseys. Does the bookstore still have the adidas jerseys?

Prediction: the offense will pick up yards in bigger chunks this year.

The Baylor game may be a repeat of the Baylor/TCU game last year in terms of points scored.

June's offense will shred Bennett's defense.

If Bennett calls "All Out", then TD

I did know he was wearing number 11 this year. Looking forward to seeing him air it out.

you mean the draw, draw pass offense? if Gilbert's the second coming of Colt Brennan, this team will be DRASTICALLY better. If he's McDermott, or worse, Zach Line & Wimbley won't survive to the midpoint of the season

If Guinyard is back to where he was pre-injury then this kid is special.

This made me smile, if he can hit these in real games then we'll finally get to see the R&S.

I'm not ready to say he's the second coming of Colt Brennan, but it sure sounds like he has the ability to do a lot of good things.
Keep him healthy, o-line!

Whatever you feel...Gilbert is THE most talented QB we have ever had here at SMU....if he even halfway lives up to his publicity...we will be forever grateful he decided to come to SMU. He has got it all and SMU is the perfect storm for him...and us at SMU!

While I love PP's reports, I've got to say it really isn't helping my craving from CFB. Sooooo rdy for the season!

I agree with you, TWALV33. The season doesn't start until we start to see PP's reports on the team.
