Gameday Expereince

Post by Unfinished »

GiddyUp wrote:Our gameday is a joke - hard to get people to come back (other than the Blvd)

I found this post in the 'Another Enemy Billboard' thread and it caught my eye. I reluctantly have to agree with GiddyUp here. I definitely think things have improved (as they always do with winning), but it would be great to get this board's constructive/feasible ideas for improving the experience?

I feel like we do a pretty good job of playing fashion guru anytime someone moves a patch on the uniforms, lets take a swing at this topic.

...And simply pinning the blame on an apathetic student body would be too easy.

Other obvious ideas would include alcohol sales, in/out policy, and the almighty "Wins = attendence = better atmosphere".

First step: Remove Robert Lee Kobb from running gameday. He was given that job with no experience purely because he's friends with June. Need I remind you that he was responsible for that "Pony Up" abomination one season?

Second step: Hire someone who has experience running in-game production at another university.

Third step: Let the new person have free reign to make things better

I am a big sunshiner, but things clearly need to change for both football and basketball. It's not rocket science either.

Ok, but that only goes so far. This gameday presentation is amateurish at best. No excuse for that.

Rarely agree with Calallen, but this is a no-brainer.
This is needs to be done like yesterday!
Spend tens of millions on a stadium and team & then hire an amateur to run your gameday?
June is a quiet, sort of boring guy, but a very good coach.
Let June coach, but he should not be in charge of gameday entertainment.
We need anything but boring for our gameday.
Find a creative guy doing a phenomenal job at a smaller school and hire him.
Like Calallen said....give the new guy full reign.

Step 1: Join RBA.

We mention we need better music and suggest some to Robert...along comes new music. We meet with Brad Sutton and ask about RBA hosting a food truck on the Blvd...now there's talk of food trucks. We inquire about setting up an open biergarten on the Blvd...SMU is setting up a Byron-Nelson-style open drinking tent. We organize a cross-stadium Red!Blue! chant...boom, it happens. While most of these ideas are being enacted by SMU, I guarantee you the ideas were birthed by RBA and come from talks with Athletics. RBA is obsessed with making Ford a more legit place to watch football. Join us.

No reason not to have every food truck in Dallas at SMU games... except I'm sure the Aramark monopolists would have a fit.

--As a recent grad/student athlete, I have to say I've never heard of the RBA until now. That says nothing about the reputation of RBA as much as it does of my ignorance. But your signature link sends me to a non-descript paypal site and a google search gives me a blogspot site that was last updated in early 2011.

I do appreciate your qualified suggestion and will look into it if you can provide some guidence.

Local or homegrown celebrities to sing the National Anthem.

Continuous score updates from games across the country.

Something entertaining on the video screen: clips from Pony Excess, vintage highlights, "great moments in SMU football", pics and bios from noteworthy SMU grads...

RBA is a grassroots, independent supporter's group (similar to Supporter's Groups in the MLS), not officially SMU affiliated, but comprised of passionate Mustang fans who wanted to join together to help create a better game day experience. It was started by an alumni (me) in 2011 who was fed up being the only one clapping or cheering for the football team in his section and has grown organically to 110 members and we're doing something about it.

The link in my signature goes to a "join" page that was created when we first started in 2011. If you check out our main page on our Blog (http://smuredandbluearmy.blogspot.com) or our Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/groups/119340008134463/) you'll be able to see lots of content posted since then. We also have a website that we are building...coming soon.

Hahah good eye. I'll trade the 'a' I should have used, for the 'I' your post is missing.
