Final Thoughts

Post by ojaipony »

My 2 cents going into the first game of the season ...

Positives ...
Depth at WR, depth at LB, best RB in conference, best WR in conference. Giddy about GG unless he shows me otherwise.

Concerns ...
Secondary (especially run support -- really surprised Roundtree hasn't developed into a starter, bummed about Middleton not working out), depth at DL (bummed about Holloway, O'Guin not working out).

Meh ...
OL (bummed about Lowe's slowness in developing/getting into shape but I'm excited about some of the young talent that will develop this/next year ... I have faith in Gottschalk, McJunkin, and Collins)

Coaching ...
Upgrades with Phillips and Palcic for sure. Recruiting seemed to have taken a hit.

Possible positives / unknowns who might surprise everyone ...
- Austin Fuller
- KC Nlemchi
- Dieter
- Hurry up offense

As for Baylor, lots of Zach Line and the deep ball. Defensively, bring the heat. We get up early, we have a great chance for a W.

What makes you say hurry up offense? Did I miss something with the offensive scheme?

I think he probably means "how the defense handles a hurry up offense"

Practice reports on PP have noted Gilbert has been running the hurry up and calling plays at the Line of scrimmage for late game situations and such. I think he might mean that Gilbert has a chance to get this offense moving down field quickly and have a better grasp of the offense, allowing him to operate in a way unlike any QB we've ever seen here.

I just hope he can read hand signals, so he doesn't have to run to the sidelines on every play! Maybe since he's a college grad he can understand signals (even though his degree is from UT).

You all don't understand. JJ's version of the hurry-up offense is to have the qb sprint to the sidelines instead of jog.

GO PONIES!!!

QB limitations forced that. Not the JJ offense.

Most posts made on here are staements of opinion...any real facts are usually an accident. 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Me too! I hope I am very wrong, but I am afraid we may get torched all year long with Chris Parks starting at CB. Chris is a great kid and will give it his all, but I am very concerned. Hopefully the safeties and linebackers can give him lots of help, but will that make us vulnerable someplace else? I hope Chris surprises me and can out physical some WR's and jump up and steal a few INT's.

Ditto.

I'm also concerned about run support from our safety positions. If you watch game film last year, Banjo made a lot of hard tackles in the run game whereas Ryan Smith got run over quite a bit. Jay Scott is a little bigger so maybe that's good. I was hoping Roundtree (at 6'2") would fill that void but I guess he's not starting for a reason (doesn't know scheme well enough or something -- I don't know). Pit and Reed are going to have to be beasts against the run and JG, Sanders, and Hunt are going to have to have a lot of sacks for us to do well (and hopefully Acker, or someone, will be a ball hawk and get INTs).

My comment on the hurry up offense regards US running it - I read an article where it was mentioned that GG was working on it and DJ mentioned that they were practicing it in an earlier PF interview. My point is that it will be a "surprise" to many of us when we go to it and run it successfully (which was my hope when we brought in JP) -- since we are so deep at WR, I think we can really wear out defenses and help keep some of the more prolific offenses we play (BU, UH, Tulsa, TCU, aTm) off the field. Quick, short passes that slowly move the chains.
