When we hired June from Hawaii

Post by CalallenStang »

A bunch of Hawaii fans were saying that they weren't surprised because June had seemingly stopped putting effort into recruiting a few years before. They were also angry because his final team at Hawaii was very senior-laden and their impression was that June left just as the cupboard became bare due to the lack of effort in recruiting to backfill for those losses.

At the time, I thought they were full of hogwash. But, after seeing Hawaii's results/struggles since then and following June's lack of effort in recruiting to SMU, I am beginning to think that they may be correct.

What say you?

Correct on all counts Calallen. One more of many reasons some here, who know some islanders, have read the handwriting on the wall and it's that time.

Isn't he recruiting when he goes to American Samoa every year?

And golfing on the Big Island?

How many Samoans do you see on the roster?

Funny you mention that. I recall from reading Hawai'i Warrior Football by J. David Miller that JJ wanted to prove Samoans could win big at football. So there was a race thing to it out there.

There are very few students over there who can get admitted academically. If he finds a player, great, but his trips to American Samoa are more about outreach, etc.

It's kinda funny reading your board. Just about every complaint I've read about JJ here was expressed in the Hawaii forum many times before during our Jones era.

I do know one thing. A JJ coached team will NEVER have a good defense and beat decent BCS type schools.

That's just the way it is with the run and shoot. The run and shoot is a great offense to have against teams with no BCS type talent as it minimizes your lack of talent but will fail against teams with superior talent.

But you guys are right, June looks like he has lost his love of the game and is just buying time collecting the big paychecks. He always goes into ruts where you think he don't give a [deleted] any longer. He's living in the past and things are not as fun as it was back then.

There we go. The middle paragraphs show exactly why June is not the guy to lead us into the Big East.

Are you starting to lay the groundwork for when you get your wish and June leaves
and lets say we fall off a cliff?

Since you have been so vocal about wanting June fired, you're now trying to set up a rationale in people's mind to blame June even after he's gone? June leaves Hawaii and they start sucking but that's June's fault?

No, IPP. Simply drawing a link between what some of the Hawaii fans said when we hired June and the lack of recruiting effort we are seeing from the staff this year (including June's comments that they aren't going out to find players).

If June leaves and we fall off because the cupboard is bare, that is on June. If June leaves and we fall off because of poor coaching, that's on the next coach.

I wanted to let him go after the Arizona State thing.
Never keep the one who wants to leave.

I heard JJ tell someone I know a little bit (a radio guy out of state) that he never knew which players he got until the information came in on the fax.
Then they laughed a little.

You know that Hawai'i's recruiting budget was small. I'd never even expect him to learn recruiting skills as a HC if he never had adequate resources to go out and recruit the continent hands on and all.

I knew Briles would do well at Baylor. I've been watching him for years and studying what he does. Texan with Texas ties helps.
Right now I worry more for the players..........

My bad. Should've added the Sarcasm Alert to my post.

Calallen I think the cupboard had been pretty bare for almost 20 years when June took over, and by June's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years he was taking us to bowl games. The year before June arrived we were 1-11 weren't we? I think June developed a lot of Bennett's players like McCann, ect. So let's see if the next guy is left with a so called "empty cupboard" can take us to bowl games like June did in his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years.

But I will say if we lose to SFA this week it would look very bleak as far as any chance of progressing this year. I am on board with June as long as we are progressing, but I think with the time he's had it is now time to take the next step towards Top 25 and the Baylor game certainly did not look anywhere close to progressing towards Top 25. We'll see what happens.
