June came to SMU to help school children

Post by couch 'em »

Came across this by accident on google:

http://dbablogs.com/2012/09/06/why-june ... to-dallas/
But what June Jones, head football coach at Southern Methodist University, said stunned me: "God brought me to the city of Dallas to help the city schools find a way to help these kids." The football coach of a private university is using his influence to pull together all kinds of people, organizations, and resources to help public schools because God told him to do it.

he initially said that he came to Dallas for a special reason, and would talk about it one day...

I wondered why he was still here. He doesn't appear to care about putting together a good football team.

I can think of about 2.3 million reasons, or whatever his paycheck is. That said, I'm a June supporter because this job has been the coaching career killer up to now.

Well, when ASU decided not to hire June, he did claim that he decided to stay because God wanted him to stay in Dallas.

IMO, June's mission is a noble one, and one that he might want to concentrate on full-time in order to maximize positive results.

you know, some of these anti-june comments are way below the belt. IMHO, it is OK to question his methods, recruiting, etc. with will reasoned arguments, but questioning his character - when he is helping children and doing the grunt marketing work of building SMU's brand - is really an abomination. June (and Daugherty for that matter) has worked with a lot of special needs kids in DFW and should be applauded for this work, regardless of whether or not you like them as coaches.

None of the comments on this thread were out of line. June is a good guy, but he needs to step up his effort with OUR team. And he isn't doing any "grunt" marketing work. He's going through the motions.

In terms of helping kids in need, he is doing great things and should be commended.

I agree that his work is to be commended, but you are wrong on a couple of points. the "grunt" marketing work is going out to the community and working with people to build our brand. People want flashy marketing campaigns, but what builds the brand is getting the coaches (actually representatives) into the community. How do I know? I have a PhD in marketing from Kellogg...

and yes, i did find several of the comments out of line. haters are haters. However, disagree with his methods, but not his character.

I disagree with his blatantly misleading comments. He came to SMU to work with school children? There aren't poor children in Hawaii? Noble work but no reason to attach gradiose lies to it.

whenever someone whips out the "i have a PHD" line - you know they are scrambling Usually that means they haven't actually done anything, but have a nice label to throw around.

June is a pretty good manipulator. I think alot of SMU community is wise to that now. As soon as bigger job money showed up he was running to try to grab it - which is fine - but then to say God told him to stay just seems less then sincere.

we have done well with June and he has done well with us. Appreciate the turn around, but i personally think we need something else to get to that next level - and SMU is ready to take that step.

Well the result have been stunning.

He doesn't do these things for marketing, he does them to be a good person. As such, he doesn't sell SMU in any way other than being known as the SMU head coach. He rarely wears school colors or logos, he never mentions SMU, and he hates doing media availabilities.

I understand that it's just not his personality. He's low profile and I can empathize with that, but it's not what our program needs. If he wants us to succeed he needs to develop a unique media personality. Most of the "greats" had it; even if it was forced or fake. Why? It gets media and recruiting attention. It's that simple.

Nothing shuts down a debate like calling someone a "hater" but you have the Phd...

I have read lot's of critiques of June's methods here and few if any of his character...I think you should lighten up Doctor.
