Good Omen?

Post by gostangs »

So looks like the new US News University rankings are out. Of note - SMU (58) passes A&M (65)and is solidly in third place in Texas, behind Rice (17) and just behind UT (46). We moved up several spots - and keep climbing this list which is great.

Others of note..Baylor (77), then waaaaaay back at the botton of the top 100 - TCU at 92.

Tech was at 165 and our not so academic friends at UH are at 184. UNT not in the top 200.

Not really football news, but hey, its all i could find today.

That's good to hear.

I did lose a bet with an Aggy friend that Cox was ranked higher than A&M's Mays School of Business.

Couldn't believe him; had to look it up myself...

I posted this in the general thread. In terms of the MBA program's ranking, that's all on the business school dean. That should never have happened. He's also let Rice move on up and pass us (they're tied for top 25). Seeing A&M higher in business school is disgraceful. For business week, we're ranked better, but folks tend to give more credit to USNews.

i do think we are the most consistently top 25 ranked grad school in the state - taking all ranking services and methodologies into consideration.

But the point of this one is that our overall undergrad university is firmly ahead of the ags - therefore we will win the game.

Aggies are quite up in arms that an inferior school like SMU could be ahead of them. Hmm.

These are dumb aggies that dont understand what ranking parameters and methodologies mean. They correlate big schools with better academics and simply don't get it that things like investment per student, peer and university academic reputation, student selectivity and quality of students matter. This isn't a ranking based on football stadiums, t-shirt fans or overall uneducated views. By every assessment, we have better student quality. In 5 years, they won't even be sniffing distance of our average student profile.

They've reached their peak as a public school. Our closest private school peer to catch up to is Tulane. The rest are in our rear view mirror.

Let's not get too cocky, we are not in the top 100 when all colleges and universities are ranked (such as Oberlin, Williams, Austin College).

Not cocky. I argue using data points and actual criteria used. Read the responses of aggies and others and ignorance just cries out. By every measure of student quality, SMU is ahead of A&M and other schools except for Rice and in some instances UT. If you take a look at Forbes list of top colleges which takes into account all liberal arts schools, etc, we are #105. Where is UT-Austin? #104. A&M? - #149. Go further down and Baylor and tcu are #213 and #214, respectively. That's pretty consistent placement in terms of where we are seen by informed, reputable sources, which is right there with UT-Austin. We both have a ways to go to get close to Rice.

There are also some people that think that the only reason we're ranked higher in these undergraduate rankings is because we're given credit for having better graduate school programs, such as the law school, which is preposterous. If that were the case, Princeton wouldn't be tied for #1 - they don't even have a law school.

I don't think SMU will ever get into the Top 20 like Rice. If everything continues on this upward trajectory we should settle into the low to mid 40's just slightly above UT-Austin. As for the ignorant Aggies who are up in arms over these rankings they still perceive SMU as the school for "rich, white kids". People who havent been on our campus in a decade probably have a reason to hold this perception. However, SMU today is a COMPLETEY different place that it was ten or fifteen years ago. SMU is light years ahead of where it was at that point. The future is very bright and A&M will be in our rearview for years to come.
Back off Warchild seriously.

I agree - this sits at the feet of the dean. He has done nothing to enhance Cox's reputation........
