Thoughts and Observations after last night's game

Post by CalallenStang »

1) Glad to get a win at the Sun Bowl. I wasn't expecting that, so I am pleasantly surprised.

2) Screw UTEP for getting that stupid "Three Best Friends" song stuck in my head with their crappy game presentation

3) The defense had a game plan and was prepared. They again looked lost when UTEP went to the no-huddle on one possession, but UTEP couldn't string together any completed passes so they had to go back to the huddle-up again soon. We need to fix the no-huddle defense, but other than that, the defense played well and deserves a ton of credit. After all, the defense outscored UTEP, 7-0

4) The offense wasn't as bad as the fact that they only scored 10 points would indicate. However, we did struggle in the redzone and turned to our struggling kicker far too many times last night after otherwise good drives. Short yardage also continues to be a concern.

5) This year's OL does not run block as well as last year's did. That said, I feel that they are pass blocking better than last year's line.

6) Gilbert is still not consistent with his accuracy and missed on the deep ball.

7) The WRs are not finishing their routes at times which contributes to our poor pass completion percentage.

8) Special Teams = bad. Enough said. On the positive side, Loftus had a few good punts.

In the end, we won because we were good in one of the three phases of the game, whereas UTEP was good in none. It's still a win and it came in a place that we have historically had very little success.

A win is a win, but this team absolutely must improve in order to have a chance against the better teams remaining on our schedule (UCF, Houston, Tulsa, and Southern Miss - despite being winless - worry me, and we could conceivably drop a game we shouldn't, like @ Rice). The sunshiners should at least recognize this point.

Let's beat Tulane.

Special teams as a whole was not bad. The FG kicking unit was bad given that the K missed 3 FG's. Our other units seemed to get their jobs done.

Every game concerns me. I don't think this team is good enough to assume any wins, not even against lowly Tulane. I am not hedging in case we lose, as it is more of an indictment on where the program is, the fifth season of the June Jones regime. To me the problem with June Jones, his expectations, and the administration's expectations is that he reached the goal sooner than expected. I think he and the administration would have been happy to get to a bowl by the fourth or fifth season of his tenure. The goal arrived much sooner than that, and expectations and goal setting was never reset by him or the administration, only some fans. I am happy to be at the level we are at, but would like to see more progress going forward and while I do not bemoan his coaching on the field, his recruiting leaves much to be desired. I think that those who criticize him for not being more fiery on the sidelines are wrong in doing so because yelling never served the goal of scoring a touchdown and personally I like constructive criticism and positive reinforcement rather than negative reinforcement. On the other hand, due to his poor recruiting it is difficult to imagine this program getting beyond the current level.

Well if we're talking about the team we actually have. . . And not lamenting about the team we "should" have. . .then I'd have to say Tulane is exactly what we need this week. I could only catch the UTEP game on the Ticket, so my ability to assess is limited. But it did seem like the offense was better this week. At least they seemed to move the ball well on some drives.

I agree, the offense had a couple of good drives, but just could not finish. It was able to move the ball and make first downs. This is an improvement over the past couple of weeks, however, they were playing against lesser talent.

JJ is probably correct in that we should only be playing TCU on our OOC and the other teams should be the likes of UNTs, SFAs, etc. This offense is apparently very complex and requires time to learn and develop. So you need the powder puffs to work on timing and defensive reads.
Just send 'da money.

Reminds me of the reason that Ron Meyer went to his KISS offense in the early 80's!

If the kids stayed on the team for 8 years sure but if its learning process every year and have to play cupcakes all the time then we will never be good
