Offense waking up?

Post by JasonB »

I know folks are going to point to yards and talk about the inconsistancy of the offense, but...

Houston: 560 yards, but on 98 plays, an average of 5.71 per play

SMU: 384 on 64 plays, an average of 6 yards per play, not bad.

Drives:
5 drives were short and no result
3 drives were short but scoring drives because of turnovers.
4 long drives 75 yards or more that ended in a touchdown.

The 5 short drives aren't what we would hope for, but 4 long drives for TDs in a game really isn't bad. The offense is slowly getting better. Combined with the Tulane game, 6 quarters of moving the ball pretty effectively.

Gilbert completed 60% of his passes tonight. Not where it needs to be, but much better than the other games so far. Hopefully he can take another step forward at the Memphis game!

Also, even with the one ugly punt, Loftus almost averaged 50 a kick tonight. He is starting to really come around.

Gilbert with four touchdown passes and two picks. I think it's fair to say this offense is clearly improving. I believe we'll continue to do so.

He was genuinely impressive on several plays. Maybe he is grasping the offense?

Exactly. A lot of people will focus on the pick six (and maybe the pass to DJ into triple coverage that worked), but Garrett did hit some huge passes tonight.

Sure you can argue some run/pass play calling, but overall the offense certainly played its part tonight.

It was nice to see the offense, defense, and teams all contribute to an absolutely dominating win.

i dont think the offense looked that good at all. Better, but it has a ways to go. the play calling is just flat out crazy sometimes.

Still made some bonehead decisions (pick six, throwing into triple coverage, throwing right to the Houston guy on the first series of the game).

But it was better than it has been, which is encouraging.

Play calling however, is as bad as ever.

Jeremy Johnson starting to put things together. About 18 catches from Inside Receivers-too much inconsistency Outside. Jeremy Johnson is on a record setting pace for first year starter. And he made some bigger plays tonite. Good sign

I was wondering what it actually looked like to drive down the field and score a TD.

Yea, this year, I hadn't seen the SMU O drive down the field. Seeing that, gives me a lot more faith.
Question about their first long drive. That was in the secon half wasn't it?

Gilbert seemed to hit players in a way that gave them opportunities to get yards after the catch, which is largely what this offense is built around. The receivers did bail him out a few times (especially that over the back catch by Johnson which was just RIDICULOUS).

Speaking of Darius Johnson, it was good to see him back in his regular form. Usually a new QB has a go to receiver that they feel most comfortable with, and that likely was DJ, so having him back and playing well is also critical to Gilbert getting dialed in.

I would have liked to have seen us hold them to fewer points, but when a team runs nearly 100 plays on you, it's tough to do that. That is the kind of offense we typically struggle with, and it's becoming more prominent in college football, so we've got to be better. But having said that, our defensive line and linebackers were simply fantastic tonight. They were all over the place.

Darius Johnson was a huge difference between the game last night and the Tulane game when he didn't play. He made some unbelievable catches. And he made yards after he caught the ball.

I just find it odd in the interview that JJ took the credit for the offensive playing better. In the video interview when he was asked if it was the offense that executed better or was it his play calling that made the team play better on offense he quickly said it has his play calling. Even if he thought so he still could have given a bit more credit to the players in regards to that question in my opinion.

That last TD drive that ate up nearly 9 minutes was freaking amazing by the players in spite of awful playcalling (3rd and 1, let's go for a pass in field goal territory while trying to drain the clock!)

Were you ok with what he was wearing? Was his demeanor satisfactory? Any spinach in his teeth set you off?
