Fun with Numbers: Major expenses not paying off for Auburn
All the schools listed here are public. So their data is publicly available. I'd love to see an analysis done for SMU.

Fun with Numbers: Major expenses not paying off for Auburn like rest of SEC

The big-budget schools aren't afraid to spend -- in part because they can -- and the results are usually positive.
Except in eastern Alabama.
Six of the nation's seven schools with athletic department expenses topping the $100 million mark have a combined record of 37-6 this season -- Florida (7-0), Alabama (7-0), Ohio State (8-0), Texas (5-2), Michigan (5-2) and Penn State (5-2). The expense data is from USA Today, which detailed revenues and expenses at Division-I public schools from 2006-11.
And then there's the seventh school, Auburn, which is setting a bad precedent in the "Fun with Numbers" Wins-to-Expenses ratios.
Below are examples of five schools that either pay stomach-churning interest rates on wins or are finding Tiffany's jewelry at the flea market. Strength of schedule does not affect the bottom line in this case. Maybe we'll tweak the formula at a later date.

I think our school is uncomfortable enough with the amount of money we are spending without a W-to-Expense analysis. I'd rather them remain naive.dcpony wrote:I'd love to see an analysis done for SMU

I haven't read the full article, but it seems fairly stupid to look at Auburn's poor season and draw conclusions from that. They did win a national championship 2 years ago.... and they are usually a pretty solid team.

Doesn't SMU have the highest paid non BCS coach in the country?

Re: Fun with Numbers: Major expenses not paying off for Aubu

Re: Fun with Numbers: Major expenses not paying off for Aubu
I wonder how donations affect these numbers.

We have one of the lowest if you take into consideration the actual money that SMU spends on June Jones.Rebel10 wrote:Doesn't SMU have the highest paid non BCS coach in the country?

This is why Turner finally got on board with our move to the Big East. He's tired of the university subsidizing the athletic department to keep it afloat. The university has made major investment in infrastructure and physical assets in the last several years and continuing to throw money at athletics was [deleted] Turner off. This was the best way for us to stay competitive and keep the athletic department and the university in the black.

couch em,
I'm as critical of the current regime as anyone on this site, but even I can't deny that we are a more competitive program in 2012 than we were in 2007. We've got two bowl victories and a road win over a ranked TCU in the past several years. While we are nowhere near where we need to be in order to compete at a high level in the Big East, we have made strides in the last several years. June Jones should be given credit for that.
I look at it this way. We did JUST ENOUGH to get into the Big East. June Jones will guide us into our first year in the conference and then gracefully exit stage right. That next hire is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL for the future of SMU football. The good news is that the job is about 1000000000x better than when we got Jones in 2007 so the pool of real candidates should be much better. Gotta hope Hart/Turner make the right move.

Now that's a statement I can get behind.StallionsModelT wrote:couch em,

Could we actually be finding some common ground? Good post, T.

Re: Fun with Numbers: Major expenses not paying off for Aubu
you might want to check back on those records at end of the year. UT will drop at least 2 more if not 3.
Re: Fun with Numbers: Major expenses not paying off for Aubu
Most schools have the booster clubs pay the head football coaches salary anyway. SMU is not doing anything new. So in answer to the question is yes SMU has probably the highest paid non BCS coach in the country.ponyboy wrote:We have one of the lowest if you take into consideration the actual money that SMU spends on June Jones.Rebel10 wrote:Doesn't SMU have the highest paid non BCS coach in the country?
