June "teetering on edge" and SMU job may open soon...

Post by ponyinNC »

From Football Rumor Mill twitter feed:

@fbrumormill: Multiple sources tell FRM that SMU coach June Jones is teetering on the edge. Don't be surprised if SMU opens.

Hmmmmm....personally I think Jones will have a one way ticket if we make the Hawaii Bowl.

They're called rumors for a reason. Probably a delay from losing to Tulane. After beating Houston, and if he can pull a win against UCF, he should be okay to finish out his contract. The only thing he has to worry about is Big East money (enough to cover kicking him out) and SMU getting a coach bag packed for Dallas.

I honestly don't know what this is supposed to mean, but if there is any truth to it and there is some movement around JJ leaving (either by his choice or someone else's) I sure as heck hope Hart has a short list and is working the phones. Last thing we need is another recruiting debacle, where in this case JJ leaves right after the bowl game and just a few weeks before signing day with no replacement named. As I don't follow that account (or really any accounts football rumor accounts)...

does this account have any track record for accuracy at all?

every AD should keep a short list in his pocket at all times. My serious wish list:

Chad Morris
Sonny Dykes
Bobby Petrino
Kliff Kingsberry (may not be ready yet)
Willie Fritz (SHSU coach...seriously a good coach with Texas ties)
Gene Chizik (he is all but out at Auburn)
Jason Garrett

Please avoid:
Houston Nutt
Derek Dooley (with Hart's ties to Tennessee, I could see this happening)
Any old, washed up re-tread

This site usually has the pulse of every school and fanbase, but like anything else, they are just rumors.

Wouldn't Chizik, Garrett and Petrino count as re-treads since they'd just been fired?

Fritz may be a good choice, but I can imagine the wailing on this list if SMU hired someone from the FCS level.

Why would anyone want Petrino to represent his/her school??? And Chizik has only shown that he can win with Cam Newton. No thanks. Dykes, Kingsbury, Morris would be good choices...bring someone with fire and a chip on his shoulder.

These were just "top of mind" examples. If I were Hart, there would be a large list of necessary qualities in the next HC - we need a coach that understands the importance of recruiting and having coaches on the staff that can get it done in Texas.

The question is does he get fired or retire? I can't imagine June walking away from the remainder of his contract by retiring and from everything I've heard the money guys love their buddy June and he won't be fired.

I can see however a situation where June retires and a settlement is reached paying him a million or two on what's left on his contract. It's obvious he's not happy, so I think this is the most likely outcome.

Exactly!

All these idiots claiming for his head need to understand that. You only claim his head once you have a pretty strong pipeline about ready to go (otherwise, you need to keep your dissatisfaction very quiet). Most of the positives we've gotten over the last 4-5 years is because of the JJ brand. If he goes this year, it needs to be handled very carefully and pleasantly by the AD and the new guy introduced next day (in fact, we could say this was "blessed" by JJ . . . maybe even him at the presser -- "another great turnaround and now this guy will take them to the next level). Otherwise, it's a mess even if you get a "name" relatively soon thereafter. Has to be all set up ahead of time IMHO. The "thorny issue" in all this of course is JP. I think it's too soon to make him HC and if someone else comes in here I don't know if he'll want to stay or even be asked (like a Kliff Kingsbury who is my top choice for the position).

But what do I know.

Bobby Petrino would be my first choice. I don't see June walking away from this job unless he has something else lined up. Remember, June is making a lot of money. I don't think he is ready to retire just yet.

Best case scenario. We can only hope.
