The SMU-Rice Series
Saturday will see the end of the final long-running continuous SMU football series remaining.
Other than the two years we didn't play football, we have played Rice every season since 1926.
Coincidentally, the TCU series is also continuous since 1926 other than 2006.

Re: The SMU-Rice Series
Have a feeling they'll find a way back onto our schedule sooner rather than later.

Re: The SMU-Rice Series
I wonder if Rice will even have football in the future. The faculty has been trying to kill it for years,
Re: The SMU-Rice Series
I think going forward they need to be on our non-conference schedule. Need to have TCU and Rice on the schedule every year. I would also like to play Baylor or Texas Tech, preferably Baylor. Then schedule UTEP, UTSA, UNT, or Tulane.

All those make sense except Rice and Tulane (tiny private schools that have no fans). You also missed A&M and Texas State.

Doesn't that have a familiar ring to it?

This is EXACTLY right.
TCU and Rice should be every year, without exception -- private schools of similar size, etc. Get those two on the schedule starting immediately when we head to the Big East, and fill in the other two spots, starting with choices from the last four teams listed there. I'd like to see Tulane every year, like Frog High and Rice.

Why might I ask? Surely not for the "sure win" factor, as proven this season.

I would like to see SFA, Rice, Baylor and TCU as our non-conference schedule for years.
Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: The SMU-Rice Series
If we are going to commit to athletics we need to sever any and all ties to rice. It's not like we get any academic boost out of it either.

Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Re: The SMU-Rice Series
Of course not.
Because Tulane and SMU have been in the same conference for several years, I have friends who are Tulane grads and live in New Orleans (read: "free place to stay"), because it's also a small private school, because the school has worked hard to rejuvenate itself after Katrina, because it's supposed to be building a nice on-campus stadium, because I like hurricanes (the drink, not the weather system), because New Orleans is a great city to visit, because Tulane is stuck in what's left of Conference USA, because we have a chance for a win every year, because ... because ... because ...

And now we are leaving.

You can make new friends.
because it's also a small private school,
SMU needs to stop associating itself with small private schools that do not care about winning and have no fans. Escaping such small private schools was a large part of why TCU joined the MWC. Escaping such small private schools is one of the great benefits SMU receives in joining the Big East. Filling our non-conference schedule with the absolute dregs of college football is a step backwards.
because the school has worked hard to rejuvenate itself after Katrina,
And SMU playing there will revitalize the economy?
because it's supposed to be building a nice on-campus stadium,
A 25,000 seat stadium.
because I like hurricanes (the drink, not the weather system),
You can have both!
because New Orleans is a great city to visit,
And can be visited when SMU is not playing football.
because Tulane is stuck in what's left of Conference USA,
That is their own making. Tulane made the choice to embrace futility.
because we have a chance for a win every year,
Playing Tulane is a no-win situation. If we win, we were supposed to so there is nothing to celebrate. If we lose, it is a tremendous disgrace.
because ... because ... because ...
No, no, no.

Which is the point I wanted to make in the thread...
Saturday is the final game in our direct link with the SWC - which is a bit sad in a sentimental way, but very exciting in so many other ways.
Go Ponies!
