How SMU ends up in the ACC...bear with me
This is long term speculation:
B1G: Adds Rutgers (BE), Maryland (ACC), which they have already done. They continue their East Coast assault by inviting UNC (ACC), and Virginia (ACC). Highly rated, state flagship schools. UNC leaving the ACC for the B1G would be the tipping point in this scenario.
SEC: Adds VT (ACC), NCSU (ACC). Pushes the SEC to the magic 16. Gets them into the last two major Southern states where they lack a foothold.
Big 12: Adds Florida State (ACC), Clemson (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC), Cincy (BE), Pitt (ACC), Louisville (BE). FSU and Clemson already had a foot out the door before Maryland left. Louisville and Cincy just make too much sense.
With the ACC having been gutted by a quick succession of raids from multiple sides, the remaining parties are Miami, Boston College, Wake Forest, Duke, Syracuse, and ND (non-football). That is a great group of similar, mostly smaller, academically-excellent institutions. That is about the only conference I can see picking up an SMU. We are never going to be invited to the Big12, so this is honestly the only scenario I see working in SMU's favor.

I cant tell if thats good news or bad news. Being in the ACC is just as bad as the BE. We need to be in PAC, or Big 12.

Not going to happen. Get over it.

SMU has had close to twenty years (since the SWC dissolved) to make its case in being included in the big boys table. The school chose not to make that case, and started wayyyyy too late with wayyyy too little effort. It's done guys. We're stuck here for the foreseeable future unless Larry Brown has us dancing every year and we somehow get a Chris Petersen of our own going to BCS games. That's not happening.

This is so true. If stability actually held, we would be getting more than what we would expect. Like he said, we are beyond fashionably late to try to return to the real college football landscape.Comet wrote:SMU has had close to twenty years (since the SWC dissolved) to make its case in being included in the big boys table. People laughed last year when I suggested that the future of football at SMU was 50-50.
That is now a reality.

Lol, I dont think SMU would cut football all together, just make it irrelevant.StallionsModelT wrote:People laughed last year when I suggested that the future of football at SMU was 50-50.

Someone needs to provide Boise State an easy win in football, that will be us unless things dramatically change for the better. It's a shame, Orsini wouldn't put up with this BS, and now he's gone.

Orsini hired and extended this BS. And the previous basketball BS too.Comet wrote:Someone needs to provide Boise State an easy win in football, that will be us unless things dramatically change for the better. It's a shame, Orsini wouldn't put up with this BS, and now he's gone.

Re: How SMU ends up in the ACC...bear with me
If we are indeed locked out in this next round of realignment, SMU needs to seriously consider dropping football. Our putrid attendance with get even worse, our ability to generate any buzz will be ZERO, and the overall financial implications of playing D1A football won't make sense anymore. The athletic department knew that the Big East was their only saving grace from a financial standpoint. Now, you can kiss that TV revenue goodbye. The Big East will fracture. We will end up on an island yet again.
Just do away with it. If we are left out the fight is over. We lost. 25 years of not even trying to win gives SMU what they deserve. No program.
Be a basketball school.

Re: How SMU ends up in the ACC...bear with me
Im not giving up on the football. We still have a chance. A weak one but still. Theres been too much tradition here to just close shop. We just need to hope RGT speaks up and starts kissing up to the right people.
Re: How SMU ends up in the ACC...bear with me
I hope the BE works out. It still has some pluses beyond other conferences - we can build a winning tradition there -get East coast press - play in post season bowls, etc.
However, there are numerous options that could be investigated, like an. Independent with our own commercial TV station in conjunction with ESPN or FOX or even locals like The Texas Rangers or The Ticket for commercial program. (We need to commercialize no matter what we do). But the biggest factor to our success will be WINNING!!!

You also thought TCU going to the Big East was incredibly stupid and impossible about 3 years ago. How are they doing these days?StallionsModelT wrote:People laughed last year when I suggested that the future of football at SMU was 50-50.

Def wrong on that one.
Not wrong on the ticking clock for SMU football.
