Bryan Hopkins

Post by Smerkins »

I was looking through past recruiting lists and saw the 5 star Bryan Hopkins. I am a sophomore and don't know a lot about SMU hoops history.

How did he end up at SMU and how was he as a player?

He was a 4 star. Was a 2 for 1. His brother Ryan did not deserve a division 1 scholarship, but we offered both so they could both stay in Dallas and play at SMU. He had a really bad injury his first year and was never the same. Very good player for us, but nowhere near what he should have been.

He was a top 35 type kid, played w/Chris Bosh, but was injured late in high school & in college. Ended up very good for us, just not as good as many thought he'd eventually become pre-injury

Rivals had him as a 5 star coming out of Lincoln. He was phenomenal talent on a phenomenal team. I saw them play 5 games his serior year. He was so quick, could jump out of the gym and had a true PG mentality. He was recruited by almost every major school in the country. That Lincoln team was the best HS team I'd ever seen (before all these private schools started stockpiling talent). Everytime down the court B Hop would penetrate, if they played off him he'd finish usually with a dunk or he'd lob it to Bosh who would dunk it. His second option was a freshman named Byron Eaton who was deadly from the 3. Eaton later played at Okie St.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, Hop was never the same after his injury but still a very good player for us. I believe his career average at SMU was 16-17 pts a game.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like he could have been a real great player if the injury hadn't happened. Good to know he still played well.

Hoping that Keith Frazier can be the biggest recruit to come to the hilltop since Bryan.

He was considered better than Deron Williams coming out of high school.

The DFW area produced Hopkins, Deron Williams, Chris Bosh, Bracey Wright (Deron Williams' teammate at The Colony, a knee injury really slowed his careeR down at Indiana), Ike Diogu (9th overall pick, bounced around the league for a long time) and someone else I believe...pretty loaded class that would have yielded even more if BHop and Wright wouldn't have had career limiting injuries.

I was told once Ryan had an offer from NTSU. Not saying I believe it; just saying I was told that.
