Interesting and it has appeal on several dimensions.

First, they are a national BB brand, which couild help in other areas, such as:

- BYU might view an All sports invitation with more interest with such a regional foe.
- BE may ask Boise State and SDSU to upgrade their membership by having their BB and other sports included.
- SDSU has strong BB credentials.
- BE will shore up BB and the Western Division with these moves.

While the Big East's seven non-FBS basketball schools are deciding what course of action to take next, there is one school that would love to be a part of any new conference or conglomerate: Gonzaga. Sources say the Zags would love to part with the West Coast Conference and be a member of a national, branded basketball conference. The theory is that if Boise State and San Diego State can be in the Big East for football, then why couldn’t Gonzaga in a basketball version? Of course, the easy response is that football is played once a week and there is usually a maximum of four or five league road games. Still, the Zags are looking out for themselves and would like to be positioned with fellow national Catholic-based schools instead of regional ones in the WCC. Gonzaga might not have a choice, but is starting to be a bit more proactive if an opportunity arises.
It makes sense to me. SDSU, Gonzaga, and BYU would definitely be good replacements for Notre Dame, Louisville, Pitt and Syracuse.

SMU would get zero income from going indy. That would not be a smart move.

It might appease the Catholic BB schools that were unhappy with the BE taking Tulane.

There are worse ideas than that like squeezing my man parts with vise grips and lighting my hair on fire but those are the only two I can think of.

For SMU, independence is the last option. And by "last option", I mean the option we look at once our application to the SunBelt or WAC has been rejected. Even then, I think its a close call between going indy and dropping to D-II. SMU would have absolutely no chance to succeed as an indy.

FCS, not D-II. We would not drop to D-II under any circumstance.

Yes, you are correct. I meant FCS. However, upon reflection I think going indy might be such a terrible idea that even going D-II may be a better option.

And yes, I am overstating the matter for effect.

If big east collapses and we don't get an invite from BCS conferences then Indy would be better than crap MWC. We probably get the same tv money, and we can schedule whoever we want.

Ron Meyer said it'd be a good idea. :)
