We Keep Mason (for now)
I hope that SMU can offer a "lucrative" incentive to Coach Mason - we "dodged" the HC bullet for now. Nevada (wanting no Woofpack connections) went aggie.

Hope Mason not getting the job, didn't jar his ego.

Re: We Keep Mason (for now)
No need for a lucrative incentive (unless you want to pay for it LOL). If Nevada offers (which they haven't) he will go. But if they do not since SMU was only around 64th in defense this year I don't see another school offering him a DC position imo.Bergermeister wrote:I hope that SMU can offer a "lucrative" incentive to Coach Mason - we "dodged" the HC bullet for now. He is a good man and has a nice wife that supports him and SMU.
Glad we have him and maybe he gets a bonus for staying.
Sombody take he and his wife to dinner.

Coach Mason is a great guy, with a great family. His wife is a kick and knows more about football and breaking down film than any of us, and his daughter has his sense of humor. I think Mason got a nice bump in pay after last season ($300-$400 range). No doubt his "D" has been the star the last few years, and w/o it, we are not winning bowls … we are not bowling. Any coach worth his salt aspires to be the HC, Mason is no different. So looking at or even courting Nevada is not a sign of … "Oh Crap" to me. I think he would love to be the HC at SMU … but I’m sure there is some uncertainty with that in his eyes not knowing what JJ might due … or be asked to do … and what the fall-out might be resulting from that. I think he felt maybe a year or two ago he would be the guy if JJ moved on .. not sure he is as confident about that now with the various changes. Although, he has my vote. He can game plan with the best, coach up the kids with the best, recruits and their families love him, all his current and past players love him … and he is well connected in the coaching ranks. He could fill out a top-notch staff IMO.
What I would like to see is Coach Mason get some help within his staff, and let him truly be a DC. Not DC, LB Coach, recruiter etc. I like all the coaches … I really do. But can you imagine what Mason could do if he had an eager/energetic/knowledgeable [deleted]-and-vinegar LB coach to compliment the rest.
Nevada’s lost remains our gain.

I was stating that he did not get the job and that we need to make an honest effort to keep him. An outstanding SMU coach, SMU parent and SMU fan.SMU 86 wrote: If Nevada offers (which they haven't) he will go.

I'm sorry Nevada wasn't smart enough to hire Mason, but as a PonyFan, I'm ecstatic that he's staying with us!

I think he wanted to hire his own staff there, something he couldn't do here. That would be a great start, let the DC actually hire and fire the people that report to him.

I ran into him at the gas station. He is one nice guy. We chatted and he again said how much he loves it here and is just as happy to stay.

I did not know that the Gas Station was still open.
I hope the raise amount has some zeros missing.

Speaking of which, does anyone know exactly what Joe Haering does here? Since Mason is DC, and he focuses & works with linebackers, and he recruits (landed a 2014 kid this morning), umm, what does Haering do? What purpose does he serve?PSCA wrote:What I would like to see is Coach Mason get some help within his staff, and let him truly be a DC. Haering's Official Bio: "Joe Haering enters his fourth season as SMU's assistant linebackers coach, having arrived on the Hilltop in 2009 after spending 12 seasons as a college scout with the Buffalo Bills."
Mason's Official Bio: "Tom Mason is in his fifth season on the Hilltop where he serves as SMU's Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach."

It appears that Haering assists with coaching the linebackers.Stlhockeyguy02 wrote:Speaking of which, does anyone know exactly what Joe Haering does here?
