SMU lands 2 on USA Today All-Bowl team

Post by PonyPride »

SMU one of four schools with multiple players honored.

Defensive ends:

-- Margus Hunt, SMU. SMU's defense slowed Fresno State to a crawl in a 43-10 Hawaii Bowl win. Hunt played an enormous role, making three tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks and forcing two fumbles.

Linebackers:

-- Taylor Reed, SMU. The combination of Reed and Margus Hunt was too much for Fresno State to handle. Reed, like Van Noy, was a stat-stuffer. He made nine tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and scored a defensive touchdown.

Getting back to the dominant performances of SWC teams, of the 27 players on that list, 11 were from SWC schools. 2 each from A&M, Rice, SMU, UT, TCU, and 1 from Baylor. 40% of the list is a pretty solid showing for Texas schools.

I wonder how many of the 27 played football in Texas high schools?

Here's how the Bulldogs' first three possessions of the second quarter went: Hunt sacked quarterback Derek Carr and caused him to fumble; Hunt sacked Carr in the end zone for a safety; and then Hunt tackled tailback Robbie Rouse for a 6-yard loss and caused him to fumble.

We've had more than our share of NFL'ers, though a good proportion of those were kickers.
