Palcic retiring

Post by Rebel10 »

Palcic Retiring- @BillNicholsDMN: SMU OL coach Bob Palcic to retire, Hal Mumme interviewing for undetermined pos.

Hopefully we will get a better O line coach. He did not do well at his longest stop at UCLA and did not do that well here. Maybe we can get a younger coach that can both coach and recruit.

So sick of people saying he didn't do a good job here. Our OL was expected to be a disaster this season and they ended up being pretty respectable.

Sorry dude but you don't just come to a school to coach one year and retire. I just hope June doesn't hire another 60+ year old buddy that can't recruit or coach. With the new recruiting rules that are in effect in August all the coaches will have to both coach and recruit well.

The job he did this year was incredible. When we watched Beachum, LeRibeus, Tennison, Turner and Brooks leave, how many thought Gilbert and Line would get through the season uninjured? I sure didn't. It's always good when a new coach or new starting player is better than his predecessor, but don't be too hasty to express happiness over Palcic's departure. Considering the lack of experienced players and the lack of time he had to work with them, we should recognize what a good job he did. I have a bad feeling there will be a time when we miss him around here.

Okay Corso (or whatever your other screen names are), I know you are buddies with Palcic but he was retired (not voluntary) after only one year. He wasn't better than his predecessor and Suan will be better than Palcic if he gets the job. The jury was out on Palcic and June needed to upgrade the staff. Let's hope the next hire gets the job done in both recruiting and coaching.

I did not say he did a bad job just not as good of a job as what SMU needed. I agree with you that he was not a recruiter. With the new rules we have to have people who can both recruit and coach. June made the right decision in replacing him in my opinion.

No worries but I disagree with that ...he is/was a very good OL coach ( ask the kids who he coached) and did one hell of a job with an early difficult schedule with a new OL AND a new QB. He may not have meshed with this staff personally and he was definatley NOT a recruiting guru and didn't care to recruit to SMU while he was here, but you have to give him props for what he did for one year here is my only point.
As far as Junes decisions on the staff hiring and firing?....who knows about that and I will leave that one to others. Will a newly hired older ( 60'ish) coach that June has known for 35 years recruit like an energetic, hungry 30-35 year old coach for SMU?.......I doubt it, but prove us wrong please.

Agree Ponyscott. Let's hope Mumme can recruit as well. We know Mumme knows how to recruit the old fashion way (see UK).

I have met two coaches, Jones and Mason, and wouldn't call either of them "buddies" although they both were real nice, if that does anything for you. But I do pay attention to the line of scrimmage, ever since Jimmy Johnson talked about how Emmitt Smith wouldn't have been anywhere near as great as he was without the strong line of blockers in front of him who "make the offense go." Giving a coach spring ball and 2-a-days with a new crew of blockers who haven't played together and then throw them out against Baylor, Texas A&M, and TCU is a hell of a way to start. You weren't impressed, but I was. Whatever. We'll agree to disagree, but how hard would it be to just wish him well?

I'll side with Urban Meyer-if you can't recruit then you can't help us. That's just the name of the game. Next

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
