BIG EAST Conference, Catholic Schools Announce Separation
Big East Announcement:
"We have not chosen a new conference name at this time and there are no favorites. We are going through a thoughtful evaluation of potential names for our conference, and will select a name in a timely manner through a comprehensive and deliberate process that involves our presidents and athletic directors as well as constituents from inside and outside the conference. We are excited about the prospect of re-branding and look forward to working with our institutions and our fans as we engage in this process."

Re: BIG EAST Conference, Catholic Schools Announce Separatio
So who is staying at Big East headquarters? Does Mike Aresco move his offices, or does the Catholic Seven take the Big East sign and set-up somewhere else? It's so weird that the de-factors are going to keep the rights and identity to the larger entity they are leaving.
Re: BIG EAST Conference, Catholic Schools Announce Separatio
Frankly I don't get why they didn't simply agree to have all the football schools leave, and take a 100 million check for leaving.

I hope he stays. He's done a phenomenal job.SMUer wrote: Does Mike Aresco move his offices, or does the Catholic Seven take the Big East sign and set-up somewhere else?

BE Blog:
"The remaining football schools in the league formerly known as the Big East have to come up with a new name to begin the rebranding and rebuilding process.
Though America 12 is one name that is favored, commissioner Mike Aresco said in a statement Friday that no new name has been decided."

It is near impossible to kick out multiple teams simultaneously. The Catholic 7 did not constitute a majority and expulsion requires a unanimous (or near unanimous) vote.mustangxc wrote:Frankly I don't get why they didn't simply agree to have all the football schools leave, and take a 100 million check for leaving.

I think what he meant is that rather than the Catholic 7 leaving to form a new conference and buy the conference name, why not have the football schools leave to form a new conference and the Catholic 7 just stays in the conference already called Big East. He is not talking about kicking anyone out, he is talking about an agreement that is substantially the same as what happened.CA Mustang wrote:It is near impossible to kick out multiple teams simultaneously. It does make some sense. Which is easier for the casual fan to follow:
The football schools left the Big East to form a new Conference X, the Catholic 7 stayed in the Big East.
-or-
The Catholic 7 left the Big East to form a new conference which will be called the Big East, the football schools stayed in the conference formerly called the Big East which is now called Conference X?

Thank you for clarifying my statement! That is exactly what I meant. Ultimately, that would be in SMU's best interest as we will end up getting the exact same result and may have managed to eliminate an entry fee.Grant Carter wrote:I think what he meant is that rather than the Catholic 7 leaving to form a new conference and buy the conference name, why not have the football schools leave to form a new conference and the Catholic 7 just stays in the conference already called Big East. I could actually get behind the name Conference X

We would still have to deal with fees for appetizers and desserts however.mustangxc wrote:

btw there are numerous reports today that the Big 12 will take the Big East's Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando. No. 2 Big East bowl. Already lost No. 1 in Orange Bowl

I think if the football schools left the Big East then we would probably forfeit the 1 year of BCS status and possibly NCAA tourney auto bid also.
