"Just 23 of 228 athletics departments at NCAA Division I public schools generated enough money on their own to cover their expenses in 2012. Of that group, 16 also received some type of subsidy - and 10 of those 16 athletics departments received more subsidy money in 2012 than they did in 2011."
Not surprising, actually.

Texas led the nation in revenue and expense in 2012. It had $163.3 million in revenue - over $21 million more than the No. 2 school in both categories, Ohio State. Texas spent $138.3 million, Ohio State $124.4 million.

The whole system is very flawed. Absurd salaries, too many sports for men and women to support with travel, academic support, facilities, etc

I don't know which is more surprising...the fact that Texas spent $138M or the fact that $70M went to sports like golf, rowing, volleyball and tennis.
