Did I really just buy this?

Post by SMUPhil »

Doing a random ebay search and I stumble upon what appears to be a Craig James #32 away jersey.

I won the auction, but dont have it in hand yet. Can anyone confirm from the pics that this looks legit?

2nd question, since I bid on a whim, what should I actually do with this? Any ideas?

I can tell you SMU RBs wore tear away jersies-it appears to possibly be a tear away. I think he wore his jersey high without tucking in shirt. Possible-SMU RBs went through several jersies a game unlike today

here is an authentic picture of James wearing away uniform. At least in this picture and year the number "2" appears different but I believe there might have been slight changes during that period

See if the name and numbers come off the first time in the wash. Then you will know. That has been my experience with items of this nature.

I did an image search for Craig James and finally found the right "2"-sophomore year against BYU

Not sure, but I think the tear away jersey's were done away with in 1981.

Very cool whether real or not. I was going to bid on that, so you are welcome for me not running the bidding up.

I did get a 1935 wire photo of Harry Shuford that I am very happy with:

Not sure what year, but it has to be after 1980 season. There were no names on the back of the jerseys in 1980. Prior to 1980, the tera aways were of two types. A light cotton shirt that easily tore off or a regular jersey with the original needle work undone and a flimsy needlework with one thread as the replacement. Because of complaints form the conference and NCAA, the tera aways went a way about mid season in 1980.

Your purchase I can understand. Some fan paying $105k for Bama's broken BCS trophy (that only cost $30,000 new) is beyond belief.
