Six Mustang Programs Perfect In Latest NCAA APR
All SMU Teams Meet NCAA Requirements

INDIANAPOLIS (NCAA/SMU) - The NCAA released the latest round of Academic Progress Rates on Wednesday, and six SMU programs - men's and women's golf, men's and women's swimming, women's tennis and volleyball - scored perfect 1,000s for the 2011-12 academic year. That number represents a 50% increase from 2010-11, when four teams scored 1,000s. Overall, all of SMU's teams met the NCAA requirements.

In addition, eight of the Mustang programs scored above 980 for the four-year span - men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's swimming, women's tennis and volleyball.

This year marks the ninth year of APR data for most teams. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

The SMU women's basketball program fell below 930, scoring a 928, but is not subject to any penalties. SMU has created an APR Improvement Plan for the program and expects that number to rise in the coming year.

The APR uses a system based on eligibility and retention. Every student-athlete can earn two points each term: one for eligibility and one for returning to school. If a student-athlete maintains eligibility for the next semester and returns, the team he or she plays for gets two points (2/2). If a student-athlete is eligible but leaves school, the school loses one point (1/2). If a student-athlete loses eligibility and also leaves school, the school loses two points (0/2). Every student-athlete's score is added up and divided by the maximum number of points attainable to come up with a team total and APR.

How many of those departures were voluntary? Telling someone they won't have a roster spot and then claiming the kid is leaving "voluntarily" when they decide to transfer is disingenuous at best.

Agreed, but then don't we need a jury to hear the cases of forced transfer versus unforced? Where does it end? The key is for a student to get a degree. If he moves from one school to another the goal is the same. I do not see how, if a kid leaves one school for another that the school should be punished.

But I do not know how the rule reads. Just asking the question.

In a brief scan of the APR rules there are adjustments made for student athletes that leave in good academic standing for a profession or who transfer to another school.

UConn basketball was banned from post season play last season due to low apr.

there have been a bunch of schools that have received scholarship reductions-there was another Big East team too just recently that I think lost a couple of BB scholarships. The real thing to watch is that bowl eligibility will be tied to APR starting in 2015-2016 AND the required multi-year APR will be raised a whopping 30 points to 930. This would have affected double digit FB and BB programs assuming numbers from recent years.
