I don't see it happening. Only true rival has always been with our friends 30 miles to the west on I-30.PonySnob wrote:Be interesting to see if Houston ever becomes a real "rivalry" for us........

It's better than nothing. I do believe though, that once the dust settles next year, SMU Houston will be the longest standing rivalry in the AAC since we started playing in '75, we might as well embrace that.PonySnob wrote:Be interesting to see if Houston ever becomes a real "rivalry" for us........
It really was the conference game that I always looked forward to the past of couple years as well.

They'll be the same as Rice, one of those rivalries that's not really a rivalry because no one on either side really cares about the game.

There is no good reason that Houston-SMU shouldn't consistently be at the top of the American. That matchup should be for the conference title most seasons. It would be really cool for SMU-Houston to be a great conference rival.

Add in that we will be also battling out on the basketball court with two decent/good teams, which will add some fuel to the fire to make it a rivalry.StallionsModelT wrote:There is no good reason that Houston-SMU shouldn't consistently be at the top of the American. For all us older folks the memory of the Pardee game is enough to make it a rivalry. We need to pound them every chance we get.

If both teams can start to win big there is no reason for it not to turn into a bigtime rivalry.sbsmith wrote:PonySnob wrote:Be interesting to see if Houston ever becomes a real "rivalry" for us........

Which were the so-called rivalries in the Big East football of late? Maybe Pitt v. WVU, or possibly Cincinnati v Louisville, but what others??? We already have a nice rivalry with UH and Tulsa that might even heat up, but I like beating TCU best.

It's the best chance we have for a conference rival. Houston can continue playing Rice early in the year and we can play TCU early as non-conference rivals, but SMU vs Houston is a natural late season game in this new arrangement
