Texas A&M vs. Alabama, Sep. 14

Post by leopold »

Being as that the third game of the season for TAMU is Alabama - and that both teams have had this game penciled in since the end of the season as THE game - does anyone think there is a possibility of a letdown the next game against us? Especially if they win? There will obviously be a significant talent gap between the two teams, and the only way I can see of us having a chance in this game is if A&M wins and simply doesn't pay attention to us the next week.

The Aggies are the only team I geniunely believe we have no real chance going in - everyone else I think we at least have a punchers chance. Can anyone see this happening?

no

without manziel, if we were playing in Ford we would have a snowballs chance. In Kyle field...... lets just go ahead and pencil it in.....

If Manziel is out then I think we have a snowball's chance. Otherwise, it won't be pretty.

If this SMU team were to go into College Station and beat this A&M team, regardless of who A&M plays the week before and who they start at QB, it would be a colossal upset. In my experience with SMU, we don't do colossal upsets. My hopes for a big OOC win are on Tech. We have a chance in that one. A&M is a lost cause.

I'm there. With my Aggie wife. In the SMU section at least.

We used to do upsets... We beat A&M in the Alamo Dome, we consistently beat Arkansas both in Dallas and in Arkansas when the Hogs were heavily favored. I am hopeful.

When did we beat A&M in the Alamodome? We did have a pretty good against Arkansas although that last game in Little Rock (Cavan era) was brutal!

was that the game Ark scored on a slant pass for like 80 yards on the very
first play from scrimmage?....and then the whole stadium had a power outage for like 20 mins

Yes......believe it might have been Houston Nutts first game as their head coach.

I don't recall beating A&M at the Alamo Dome (perhaps it was before my time?), but I was around for a win against Arky in Shreveport in 1997. Arky was probably favored, but they weren't very good. In upset terms, that win would not compare with us going into College Station this season and beating the Aggies on the road. If we do that, it would be an upset more on par with the 1980 Texas game.

That Arky win seems like a long time ago. I remember a couple of subsequent games against Arkansas before they killed the series where we got crushed. The last Arkansas game I attended was a 35-0 (or thereabouts) blowout at the Cotton Bowl in front of 50,000 Arkansas fans. It was horrible.

You are right about SMU having success against Arkansas. 4-7, including 3 in a row, post Death Penalty. Certainly better than we were doing against most opponents at that time.

You are not right about beating A&M in the Alamo Dome though, that was a 21-21 tie in 1994.

The "win" over A&M in the Alamodome is undoubtedly the 21-21 tie in 1994 (which, famously, won Sports Illustrated's Upset Of The Year). A&M was #7 at the time.

Many forget we only lost 20-17 at Kyle Field in 1995.

We have not beaten A&M since 1984 and the Alamodome opened in 1993.
