New Offense?

Post by gostangs »

Not trying to be snarky - i am really curious about this - and hoping someone can explain what were the new wrinkles in our offense? It seems like the only run play that worked for us last year (delayed draw) was totally abandoned - and about the only thing new i noticed was the motion RB for the bubble screen...which was great for 4 yds but not exactly dynamic. I was expecting a three ring circus and got a view of paint drying.

There was all kinds of new formations and wrinkles-they are using Jeremiah Gaines exactly how I hoped-give it some time. I'm actually excited about the changes and the quicker pace

I agree, I think against a lesser front 7 our offense will be really good.

You definitely got a 21st century Air Raid vibe from this offense, you could tell Hal Mumme was in charge

Shallow Cross-used successfully several times
Shotgun Splitbacks
Pistol PA pass
Shotgun Quads-4WRs to one side
They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

We ran a bunch of different formations and actually put people in motion. I would of like to have seen us run the ball more. I am curious to see what else we will roll out there.

try to watch a replay-Gaines in slot off line helping in blocking, 2 back, Gaines as UB, Gaines 2nd receiver in 3 wide. there was one successful series we were running the Tulsa offense including a receiver reverse. the changes were there on at least 20-30 plays. The mere fact we used a 6-2, 235 Inside Receiver is a MAJOR change-they got him in the right spot-I'm relieved they aren't using him outside-he can be more effective inside as a slightly shorter Jace Amaro-that kid is a stud catching and blocking-NFL First Rounder. It might take a while to fully implement especially since Gaines is freshman

It was definitely there. First play of the game was 2 back shotgun and the next was empty backfield both things you would have never seen before.

Jet Sweep, Fly Sweep with Thompson

Honestly I don't want to see Thompson at all. He is the fastest receiver in the history of the world to never get any separation from a DB.

I liked what I saw too. GG didn't make mistakes and looked good.

TTU just had more talent- we couldn't push them off the ball or create space for our running game.

Play like this the rest of the year and we win American conference games.

Have we done a reverse before?

Not from that formation. That play is a staple in the Tulsa offense-and I'm hoping to see Gaines used in rushing plays later. There is a whole series of plays Tulsa runs out of that formation. You could also bring in a Hog Wild QB or whatever you want to call a running QB-fake the reverse and either keep on the sweep or throw the ball

The quicker pace was helped by the fact that - unlike in prior years - the QB did not run to the sideline between plays to get the next play to call from JJ.
