Garrett Gilbert: 5th in Total Offense & 7th in Passing

Post by StallionsModelT »

It has only been two games but I think we are seeing a much better Garrett Gilbert here in 2013. Lets hope this off week allows some of the young WR's to continue to gel w/ Gilbert and we see a bit more diversity in the WR rotation. I want to see more of Taylor, Gaines, and maybe Halverson.

It is interesting that the offense, despite some clearly weak areas, is actually performing. Yes, the O line and Red Zone offense need to improve. And we need to get our top RBs healthy. But it has been a very long time since we have seen an O deliver this early in the season.

Darius and Gilbert are doing exceptionally well despite my concerns about some of the balls Darius dropped. If they can get a little bit better at their chemistry they will be a great duo in college football. Darius could be one of the guys that helps GG get to the NFL.

I agree, playing so much better. No interceptions! Now the Oline and D need to catch up and win this conference (our only hope for legitimacy) . As I said we will be "battle-tested" by the Rutgers game no matter what went on in fall camp.

IMO, the guy that has been a disappointment (so far) is Thompson. The kid has fantastic speed but just isn't consistent in catching the ball or being on the same page w/ GG. I think the A&M game would be a good opportunity to start working in Ja'Bryce Taylor and Jeremiah Gaines while we phase out Thompson and Holman. Those kids are veterans and can provide some quality depth, but we are leaving more talented guys on the sideline when Taylor and Gaines aren't out there.

Just from the casual fans observation, I am pleased with Gilbert through the first two games. Hopefully we start to get better around him.

I posted those numbers earlier and wondered whether SMU was going to roll out Heisman campaign-but for balance Gilbert is 67th in Passing Efficiency. To really call his play outstanding he needs to make throws downfield. Since he got here he has extremely poor yards per attempt and yards per completion. On the positive side, he is running this modified Air Raid offense correctly if he can add that one dimension to his game

Agreed on lack of downfield production, which is where I think Holman and Thompson have been disappointing. Give Taylor or any of the other 20 wideouts we have on the roster a chance to be the deep threat.

In the R&S, if the WR doesn't know the route to take just as the QB, won't that lead to a lot more incompletions and int's? Isn't it imperative the WR know the offense more than most offenses? Or did I make that up?

I'm sure that is a huge part of it, but Thompson and Holman arent getting it done.

Thompson had cramps or similar issues this past game and on one of those Air Raid short crossing patterns vs. Tech he got blasted. I was hoping he would be better on shaking those off this season, but...
