Someone Talk Me Off The Ledge!

Post by shadowman »

2 million a year coach with a great pedigree can only win games with other recruits and transfers. The offense looks so outdated and so predictable, you need a special quarterback to even attempt it.

After all this time, his recruiting has sucked BIG TIME, we have players on our team that could not even star in the sunbelt. And what we get, is what we got.

Just freaking pitiful, and no hope in sight. Fire June, fire everyone, tear it down and start again.

Tear it down and start over. PLEASE!!!!!
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

You don't go all the way back to your departing city just because you have a connecting flight. Coach Jones got SMU un-stuck, now it's just time to pass the baton.

That is the correct analogy Cox. Time to let someone else get us the rest of the way up the ladder. its the normal progression.

We need to stop with his salary. It's not your money and it's not mine, so I don't care whether he's paid a billion dollars a year or a nickel. We stunk today. Coaches, players, radio guys, trainers, etc. Bad day all around. If USF can hang with UCF, so can we. That's going to get me to next Saturday, anyway.

Don't jump and don't despair. A visit to the Bush Library tomorrow will make everything better.

yeah but he's also hindered us for years to come with his half-[deleted] recruiting. The next coach would need a couple recruiting classes to get out of this mess

Maybe, maybe not. SMU isn't losing many key guys (GG being the main one). If you cut ties with Coach Jones now, the next guy has something to work with. It's a small class, so we'll have 70 +/- of our 85 back (hopefully bigger, stronger, faster).

On offense Gilbert, Johnson, and Gottschalk are gone. Acker, Joyner, Pope, and Scott on defense. That's 7 of 22 starters. That's quite a bit.

Someone Talk Me Off the Ledge implies something drastic has happened that is leading you to extreme measures, ie the possibility of Jumping.

I don't understand that thinking, not at all.

Nothing dramatic has occured here.

Better analogy is Grandpap is finally going to die from cancer, do we pull the plug now of keep him on life-support for another season.

for the last 3 years including this year we are losing better talent than we are developing. I really think we are stair-stepping down. The young players we thought would contribute especially on defense this year didn't show

True. I thought we'd take a step back on the DL after losing Hunt and Grenier, but I thought we'd finally have a healthy secondary and our linebackers were supposed to be badass.

PonyFans' pre-season impact defensive player of the year selection (or whatever it was called) Jay Scott had a terrific game last week, but otherwise has been pretty quiet.

Fair point, but let's be honest, only a few of those guys are impact players. Plus, and few rarely focus on this, you get 70 kids back with one more year of conditioning and experience. I mean Joyner was a 5.2 2* with offers from SMU and Sam Houston. Pope was a 5.4 2* kid with garbage offers. The guys you listed above were important guys this year, be let's not fear the sky is falling simply because those seven guys are graduating (though, losing GG stings). For me (and I think for just about everyone) it's that we're not seeing sweeping improvement in recruiting. It's not that we can't plug six of the seven holes from above.

Garrett is a given, but consider this: your leading pass catcher; your top 2 leading tacklers (one of which is now playing RB) and 3 of the top 4; starter on the OL; your best DB. All of them are gone.

In my honest opinion, those are all impact players. When you say "only a few of those guys are impact players," are you judging on a career or this year? If by year, then the only one you could feasibly say isn't is Gottschalk. Are all of their replacements equally as good? No. Is that the problem? Yes. Like Stallion says above, "we are losing better talent than we are developing."

Plugging those holes isn't the problem. Plugging them with suitable replacements is.

EDIT: Holman is gone as well. 2nd leading receiver in terms of yards. Leading receiver in yards per catch.
