Was Neuheisel campaigning for the SMU job on the Fan?

Post by Insane_Pony_Posse »

Anybody hear Rick Neuheisel on 105 The Fan a few minutes ago? If I read between the lines right he was nearly campaigning for the SMU job. I guess he will announce the Army/Navy game tomorrow. Neuheisel said he is "anxious to get back on the sideline", "has a son at SMU", referred to himself as a "Dallas guy"....and he ended the conversation with "Pony Up". Not sure we would even want him...I guess it always comes back to "vs who else".

Probably said that because his son is on the team.

He's definitely the type of "proven" coach we'll be looking to hire if we have a vacancy at HC. Just good enough to fool people into thinking he's better than the last guy but not quite good enough for other schools to want.

He stone-walled us in 2008 waiting for UCLA to give him a yes or no answer. I think Slick Rick was Gerry Ford's #1 choice.

If true, that's beyond a little campaigning. Reminds me of Larry Brown's open interest in the bball job.

I don't know if he wants to get on the sideline as an assistant or what but if he stone walled us I wouldn't even hire him as an assistant. But that's just me.

Is it reasonable to expect a coaching candidate who has two offers to prefer us over a UCLA?

He is the opposite of June Jones. He can recruit and can promote the program. Unfortunately, he couldn't coach a bunch of fraternity brothers to a party with free beer.

Particularly when he's a UCLA alumnus and former player, and a LA resident with (at the time) 2 school-age kids.

What about getting him in as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator. Keep Mumme as Offensive Coordinator, Mason as DC, Get a new Runningbacks coach...maybe we can get something good happening

A stone wall is still a stone wall. I am sure there are other good candidates out there as well. Again, I said that I would but you might. Some think he is a snake oil salesman but whatever. I am sure we will find out soon enough.

Didn't UCLA fire him in 2011?
