Pastner/students

Post by East Coast Mustang »

Heard Pastner was jawing with studnets during the game...Any of you current students able to shed some light on this?

Paster really acts like a [deleted] throwing childish tantrums on the sideline. We were cracking up watching him throughout the game

I love his energy. Obviously I love our coaching staff, but I'd be totally happy if Josh was our coach.

As an opposing team's coach, it is great to see our fans get him riled up though.

One of the students said that he was having fun with the students and they were having fun with him. A student even said that Pastner thought one of the comments made by the students was so funny that he gave it a thumbs up.

I noticed one of the refs talking to the students and laughing. He was motioning with his hands that they were shaking the floor when jumping up and down. He seemed impressed.

Pastner is an incredible recruiter, but isn't the best strategic coach

I wikipedia'd him out of curiosity during the game and I was surprised to read the tidbit about his Dad handing him the head coaching reigns of an AAU team when he was only 16. Check it out, it was interesting.

As for strategist. Leaving the heavy, winded big center in the game during full-court press, and then sit down into zone when we broke it...interesting way to coach when you're down 25. I couldn't be more grateful, Josh!

No. He's terrible. Living off Memphis's history and Calipari's success.

He had never beaten a top 25 team until this year...

I'm cool with agreeing to disagree, but if you change the words "living off" to "continuing" it becomes an achievement a lot of schools would kill for after losing a coach like Calipari.

Obviously he's no Calipari, but he's got a great reputation as a recruiter and he's still very young for a high-level NCAA head coach.

As has been said, Pastner is a great recruiter but has a way to go as a bench coach.

He was on the road to KY to join Calipari's staff when he got a call from the Memphis AD offering him the head coaches job, so he turned around an headed back to Memphis. A number of other coaches declined the job,and Pastner was considered a last resort.

There is some frustration in Memphis with his record against ranked teams, but that is more than made up for by his active role in the community. He is a legitimately good guy, even though he looks like a doofus with his play cards.

I knew it was going to be a fun game when he was half way onto the court 1 minute into the game. When the ref approached him he got right in the ref's face. From my observation it looked like he was saying he had to go out that far because it was too loud for his players to hear him. Even if that wasn't the case, I loved booing him the entire game when he was on the court.

I also noticed not long after the students yelling something at him and he immediately turned around and jawed back. I thought it was great. Reminded me of Bob Knight coming into Moody and hating his life.

He seems like a good guy. Really has underachieved with some real good teams.

Our students were getting him on both sides cause the guys on the baseline joined in. It's fun to watch.

Watching him go back and forth with the students was hilarious.

I sat at the scorer's table, and was right next to the Memphis radio crew, so I was four seats from the end of the Memphis bench - pretty good view of Pastner, and his bench.

First things first: great job by the students who were right behind me. I put my head down a few times because I was laughing so hard at some things that were said behind me, but more than that, my ears were still ringing after the game - after the WOMEN'S game.

Secondly, the comments about him roaming out on the floor are right. All coaches wander on to the playing surface a little, but he looked a couple of times as if he were joining the Tigers' defense. I was kind of hoping an SMU player would swing out wide and accidentally/on purpose run into him, which would be an automatic technical foul. But the officials never told him to get back, and he never got in the way of a play, if I remember correctly.

Third: it's easy to see why Pastner is a good recruiter. He got in the face of an officials several times, but then he cracked a joke or smiled, and gave a "you're right - we understand each other" sort of look to the officials. Plus, he knows how to target and identify his audience: not only did he work the officials, he also opened his post-game press conference by kissing up to a long-time Texas AAU coach who "helped make Texas basketball as great as it is" (something like that - I'm paraphrasing).

At the beginning of the game, he had a little give-and-take with a couple of the students. He openly laughed at something that was said in his direction (I couldn't hear it) and smiled at the student who said it.

Oddly enough, he didn't seem so amused at the students' comments toward the end of the game. Go figure.
