Watching film (Hawaii style) vs visiting high schools
Now I see why players get offers that have never heard from the coaches. Also explains why June or his coaches rarely visit the high schools. I guess it is more of pro/Hawaii approach than a college approach.
Report from the 3pm pc:
Many times during the press conference coach Jones reiterated that his staff targets recruits based solely off of game film noting that the film doesn't lie. He said that the process is to identify prospects on film and then to contact their high school head coach to get their scouting report on the player.
I guess this type of recruiting is what it will be for the remainder of the June Jones era. Nothing will change.

Fail
Like the two are mutually exclusive. I don't know any Coach great at recruiting who won't use the word "relationship" within 2 sentences when talking about recruiting

Nothing wrong with evaluating film...I'd imagine June and our staff are better at evaluating a recruit's talent level than the guys at Rivals...but why call the coach to offer? Why not call the player and begin developing a relationship? Blows my mind

Re: Watching film vs visiting high schools
here's a great recruiter talking about recruiting:
Assembling a stellar recruiting class is not achieved in one off-season.
"The most important thing is getting on kids early, when they are freshmen," Klemm said. "You have to evaluate talent and project. There is a maturation process. You want to establish a relationship so when the light clicks on and other teams come in you are entrenched in the kid's environment."
Sometimes, Klemm said, that means just being a friend.
"You have to have the kid's best interest at heart," Klemm said. "They'll listen to you and trust you."

It's not about being better than Rivals it's about getting to the schools seeing them in person and building relationships with high school coaches. At TCU and other schools they have such s good relationship with the high school coaches that the high coaches call them when they have a good kid. They would rather evaluate than recruit.

I don't disagree, I think our staff's recruiting efforts are pathetic

Definitely easier to watch film and send offers than to go to the high schools and build relationships with the coaches and players imo. Same thing they were doing at Hawaii when they were a long way from the mainland and now they are still doing it while they are on the mainland.

The biggest problem is that they mostly only have the film sent to them to evaluate. Why would a high level recruit send out film to SMU when they already have other schools interested in them and visiting them? I suppose recruiting sites have film of many of the prospects the coaches can look at, but then they also get to see who is offering these kids and decide the fight for them is too hard.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

is it 4 or 5 sightings of Larry Brown in Dallas and across the country personally scouting recruits at games and practices on precious off days in THE LAST TWO WEEKS ALONE. June sucks-his excuses suck and it is time for him to go

This is what he said a few minutes ago at the signing day event.

Signing day event is almost sickening to watch.

Yeah, nothing but June's typical pontificating while fielding a bunch of softball questions.

The good news is we have had more pro players than other teams. No rankings or championships, but June is happy to play in the Hawaii bowl and get 2-3 players in the NFL.

Sounds like he is highlighting individual achievement more than SMU's achievement as a program.

Re: Watching film (Hawaii style) vs visiting high schools
well, that about sums it up. Offer through coaches, don't talk to the players. Offer them, they accept, don't develop the relationships. Larry is texting these high school kids and checking up on them. Don't tell me it's just hoops, its a philosophy that is done at every top program. June's philosophy stinks and he will never change. Just a few of the coaches making efforts would make a huge difference. Obviously we know the coaches name at Houston Lamar, beyond that I doubt hardly any "relationships". Un freakin real...
