Down goes UNC!!!
Yes, UNC has been investigated by the NCAA and the media for the past few years (basketball and football), but I really wonder why Rashad McCants would go public with the specifics of how UNC was essentially giving passing grades to kids. Rashad McCants even said that he made the Dean's List at UNC and admitted that he never went to class and tutors were doing his work for him and writing his papers. McCants admitted that other high profile players at UNC all had tutors write papers for them. Just guessing here, but high profile players on the 2005 UNC Roster (Rashad McCants, Sean May, Raymond Felton, Marvin Williams)
Kids didn't have to go to class. Kids didn't have to do any school work. Coaches were aware of everything. Coaches helped players change grades so that players could remain eligible. McCants said that Coach Roy Williams replaced one of his Fall or Spring class grades with a class that he took in the previous summer so that he could remain eligible the year that UNC won the National Championship. Crazy. None of this is a surprise, but having a high profile athlete come out and say all this to TV cameras, wow! The NCAA better come down [deleted] UNC. What more evidence do you need to punish a program? Should be fun to watch.

Should they be punished? Yes 100%
But I don't think this is something we should be celebrating. These kids were robbed of an education.
I always found the chip on our collective shoulders fascinating. Since we got screwed over, we want every other large program to suffer.

This is Tar Heel Nation we are talking about here.
Nothing will come of this, at least not from the NCAA. The Board at UNC, however - they may have finally had enough. BUt noting will come from NCAA.

I read the article and McCants comes off bad to me. He is acting like a victim here. Nobody told him he had to take easy classes or not go to school at all. He chose to do that and now he is ratting out the system that he used! Carolina is no angel here and I am sure they are towing the line pretty close but if McCants was interested in an education, he had a full ride to a very fine university and he CHOSE to take the easy path. Now that the basketball career is over he is looking to cash in with a tell all book. Pretty sorry in my opinion.

Really just curious here with my questions, what am I missing? Not trying to start anything...
1) Why wouldn't the NCAA come down on UNC?
2) How can the NCAA not come down [deleted] UNC?
3) How much more blatant does a program have to act to get punished by the NCAA?
Professors were involved. Coaches were involved. Students were involved. Student/Athletes were involved. This is not just about Rashad McCants. Many more players, coaches, professors and tutors were involved in both Basketball and Football.

Times are different and there is just too much $$$ for the NCAA to come down on major programs. Too many people with lined pockets that stand to lose too much. It ain't right, but sadly it's the world in which we now find ourselves.

No one robbed them of an education. They were on scholarship and chose not to attend classes or put forth any effort to their academics. While it is a sad state of affairs, they have no one to blame but themselves. I am sure that given UNC's resources if these players really did want to learn they had plenty of options for tutoring.

Re: Down goes UNC!!!
Can we please just call this what this is?
Many schools are simply "farm clubs" for the NBA and/or NFL. It's a business. "School" . . . "classes" . . "education" is all just window dressing. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure one can indeed get a great "education" at these "schools" but they exist to make money. Football, and to a lesser degree, basketball, are their major revenue sources. They are for profit entities (yes even the "public" schools). So let's just relax and enjoy the entertainment (we'll continue to pay to get it). Because that's what it all is: FOR PROFIT entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less.
Enjoy SportsCenter tonight. I will.

Exactly. The major programs have 100 pct players that are not student athletes - just athletes. It's been that way for 25 yrs. The whole thing is a farce.
