E sanders has been doing a q&a on twitter and someone asked about June's playbook. Guess it's not shocking to anyone who watches the team that we don't have too many plays but isn't 15-20 pretty limited? No idea where most programs would rank, but thought it was interesting
@E_Sanders88: "@SteelCurtainPEH how thick is June Jones play book? 1 page or 5 million? Seems like it could be either! #AskE" not very thick. 15-20 plays

Re: Playbook
Well each play gives each receiver at least 2 options so the variable complexity has the potential to grow. If the defense knows what to do they could limit it though.

Re: Playbook
I think malonish is right - it's not the number of plays, but the available variations. Jones works very closely with the receivers during practice, during the skeleton (no defense) and regular (with defense) passing drills. He and WRs coach Jason Phillips constantly offer advice to a player about how to line up, or they discuss what the WR sees from the DB. Both coaches spend loads of time saying "if the DB does this, you do that" … which can mean breaking off a route quickly to "sit" in a seam (Cole Beasley was great at that), racing across the field at a number of different angles, going deep, etc., and how to get by DBs in each scenario. They are absolutely meticulous about the detail of how the receivers get through press coverage, their footwork when running routes, etc., but the numerous variables within each play make the offense appear more complex than it is in the way it's written.

While June is not the perfect coach, one of his problems is not his "simple" offense.
From what I understand about the RnS, it has a relatively small number of plays but a huge number of options based upon what the defense does.

Does the pre-snap QB Walk of Shame count as a "Play?"

Nope- that b fore-play.
Re: Playbook
So 15-20 plays and the QB still has to go over to the sidelines after every play to talk to JJ? Just not what I pictured when he came to SMU. Thought he was a guru but turns out he was living on his past reputation a decade before and so were members of the media. So much potential at SMU even after four bowls.

Someone might pick up on signals if there are 15 set ups for plays...

because there are no easy hand signals for "have that guy go over there, that guy come towards me, that guy go long and have the back block".

Yeah, it's a small number of base plays but each receiver has multiple route options on each play which creates the variations. In my opinion this is fine for passes but really leaves a weakness in the running game. You will notice that we only have about 3 different run plays which become pretty easy to stop when you don't have Zach Line running them.
