Former SMU coach to lead WNBA team

PHOENIX - Former SMU men's basketball coach John Shumate is the new coach for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, The Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.

The Mercury went 11-21 last season. Cynthia Cooper resigned as coach after 10 games and was replaced by assistant Linda Sharp.

Shumate's SMU teams went 78-118 from 1988-95. He was a first-round draft pick of the Phoenix Suns in 1974 and played seven NBA seasons for five teams.
