Tom Mason talks to media today
Tom Mason spoke this morning about his position and said that taking the interim was "career suicide." He said that his phone is not ringing. I hope it is merely because it is early. I know part of the defensive issues are on him, but I hate that his great defensive coaching prior to that are forgotten thanks to this horrendous year and him stepping up to shoulder the load. I agree that Tom Mason needs to go somewhere else if nothing else but to remove all JJ taint from this program, but I would hate to see it go poor for him.

I hope coach Mason lands another decent gig. He stepped up and did what he could to keep this boat afloat. Unfortunately, tiki had submarined it to the point there was not a lot to salvage. Like he said, he knew it would be career suicide but had enough respect for the players, the school and the fans to take on the responsibility in spite of the consequences.
Re: Tom Mason talks to media today
I personally like Tom Mason and I feel bad he was put in the position he was. Of course he was put there by June Jones. It make sense for him to make some excuses (like academics which is a fake excuse and lack of minority presence which is a real issue) but at the end of the day this team has little to no talent on it. We are a school in Dallas Texas not getting some kids here that can play is entirely on the lack of effort by the coaching staff to recruit. That lack of effort came from June, period.

Mason is a good person, a good coach, and a loyal friend of SMU. He'll land on his feet.
Re: Tom Mason talks to media today
I appreciate Mason having the courage to stick with something when he's put in a terrible situation BUT he was part of the staff that made little to no effort to recruit, and let's not pretend like our defense was all that great in recent years. better, sure.
Re: Tom Mason talks to media today
Mason deserved better from the guy that abandoned him. Wish him the best.
Re: Tom Mason talks to media today
I don't think it is really career suicide per say, because no one is going to solely judge him based on his 9 losses as an interim HC with this type of team on the field. I'd hope so anyway.

The defense bailed this team out on more than 1 occasion. We don't go to 4 bowls without Mason.
Re: Tom Mason talks to media today
Completely agree. That doesn't mean our defense was something to write home about week in and week out

True, he said that he recruited most of the players on the team. So he is partly responsible for the low level of talent we have on the team.

I totally agree. It's amazing that our defense got us there when we had the QB and offensive guru.

I think he was the only one that recruited anyone really.

Mason isn't dead yet, probably has to drop back down to position coach if he wants to stay in FBS though.

Mason was complaining today because SMU didn't wait until after the UConn game to hire Coach Morris. I guess he did not understand that SMU was trying to get the new coach on the recruiting trail as quickly as possible.
